We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anissa Villanueva. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anissa below.
Anissa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
The autonomy to function as an independent entrepreneur and channel my creativity has proven to be an invaluable privilege. Balancing the demands of a professional career with the joys of parenthood is a rewarding experience. Working from home affords me the flexibility to witness and actively participate in the growth of my two children. It is a truly gratifying journey that seamlessly integrates my professional and personal spheres.
Anissa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
From a young age, I was immersed in a world of creativity, channeling my artistic endeavors more towards tangible creations than digital pursuits. Crafting dollhouses from cardboard and experimenting with clay sculptures were my early outlets. My father’s involvement in photography, particularly for his publication, exposed me to the nuances of the craft. Joining him on out-of-state convention trips became invaluable experiences that deepened my understanding of photography.
In 2016, a significant milestone was reached when I acquired my first DSLR, marking the commencement of my journey into vlogging and video production. However, it wasn’t until my senior year of high school in 2018 that I formally ventured into professional photography. Enlisting friends as models, I swiftly secured my first paid client, propelling me into a period of exponential growth. Post-high school, my dedication to providing clients with exceptional experiences and high-quality yet affordable photos became the foundation of my business.
Recognizing the financial constraints that many face, I made it my mission to capture precious moments without placing an undue burden on clients. Around 2019/2020, I achieved a significant milestone by securing my first wedding gig, marking a momentous step forward in my evolving career.
At the core of my approach lies a commitment to delivering the best possible experience and photos for my clients. Infusing sessions with fun, I aim to capture the playfulness within families alongside the heartfelt moments. While each image is a reflection of my artistic expression, I consider them your photos. My passion lies in delivering a comprehensive collection of captured moments for you to cherish and revisit in the future. Rejecting strict quotas, I reassure my clients that the memories captured are theirs to enjoy, as I don’t withhold any of the photos taken – these moments are for YOU!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the absolute delights of being a creative artist in the photography world is witnessing the fantastic journey of families. It’s like a reunion with familiar faces – families return for weddings, updated family pictures, and all the exciting events that unfold. There’s something magical about capturing the evolving chapters of each client’s story.
What truly warms my heart is the chance to reconnect with these wonderful families, year after year. It’s not just about the photos; it’s about sharing in the joy of their growth and capturing those extraordinary moments together. We become more than just photographer and client – we become friends.
Photography, for me, is all about building a community, not a competition. It’s about creating lasting connections, sharing laughs, and being a part of the special moments in your life. I’m not just here to snap pictures; I’m here to celebrate and capture the unique essence of your journey.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Around 2018/2019, I dipped my toes into the Instagram scene. Honestly, I was a bit lax with my posts and consistency. It’s been a 6-year journey to reach where I am now, and it hasn’t been a walk in the park. But, hey, I’ve turned it into a fun adventure, and the growth has been real!
What’s my secret sauce? Well, a generous sprinkle of networking, a dash of fun, and a whole lot of inviting vibes. I went all out – ads, follow for follow on Instagram, and weaving a web of connections. Oh, and let’s not forget the magic touch of having my clients tag me when they share posts featuring my work. It’s like having a fan club that builds itself!
Seriously, investing in your business is the name of the game. I can’t stress it enough. Whether it’s shaking hands virtually, doing a follow dance on Instagram, or splashing out on some ads, it’s all part of the hustle. I didn’t just sit around waiting for algorithms to notice me; I actively invested in my growth.
Sure, you can scroll through countless TikToks, Reels, and Facebook posts claiming to unlock the algorithm’s secrets. But let me tell you, those tricks won’t work if you’re not willing to invest in your own success. So, grab your virtual networking hat, sprinkle some fun into the mix, and watch your social media garden flourish!
