Alright, Rachel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
My defining moment was taking the plunge and becoming a business owner! I was working for a wonderful couple, who respected what I brought to their business and I equally respected the professional home they offered me, so when they decided to close their spa I was heartbroken. Feeling lost and unsure I did what most do, look for another job, but after a few weeks the idea of working for someone else just didn’t feel right. I took my years of experience, sent out a hope, a prayer and went for it! Brick City Spa was born. The spa and wellness industry has always felt like home to me but nothing feels as rewarding as developing a vision, see it come to life, and encourage its growth!
Rachel , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At 18, I sat in my traditional college classroom bored out of my mind. My eyes glazed over uninterested in anything my professor was saying, it was time for a course correction. Tapping into my childhood I remembered happy times of my mom and I playing “skincare” as she gave me pretend facials and my dad being a willing victim, letting me do extractions on him, so it only made sense to enroll in esthetics school.
After working with a plastic surgeon, multiple day spas, and luxury resort spas, I knew I wanted to sprinkle a hint of each part of my favorite aspects of each of those places into my own spa. We offer our guests the amenities of a luxury experience with a lounge providing snacks, hot tea service and a state of the art halo therapy sauna room that can be added on before or after your treatment. Our treatments range from an extensive array of individualized facials and skin care treatments to massage therapy, body treatments and complete spa days.
Our skincare offerings really are my personal and professional passion, developing regimens for clients to clear acne or help a client look as youthful as they feel is the ultimate reward. Constant education and research goes into crafting one singular treatment, so when bringing in new techniques like Jetpeel, BioRepeel, and CellStory to our arsenal, we are experts to pick the right treatment for your concerns.
Typically skincare can be overwhelming to a client, so we make it simple! We ask our clients to schedule a customized facial at the length of time they can allow in their calendar. We’ll begin each facial with a consultation and analysis to form a plan together.
I would say what I am most proud of is the strong community that has been formed within the spa. In the beauty industry achieving a life of abundance can be not so pretty, so when cultivating my team I knew I wanted to break industry norms and offer a home to like minded female professionals that are experts in their field. Professionals who believe in collaboration and kindness over competition and greed. When we lift each other up we all grow.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I don’t believe in regrets. Our choices shape our chapters and while some chapters may be celebrated and others challenging, my story is unique to me. I wouldn’t rewrite it. I am beyond grateful to have found my true passion in my career.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Interpersonal skills, people generally just want to be heard and seen, so listen!
