We recently connected with Aroon Duncanson and have shared our conversation below.
Aroon, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I grew up in a household where both of my parents were business owners, and I always knew I would one day work for myself.
I am so incredibly grateful for the business I have built for myself, and having the ability to create my own schedule, make my own rules and build my ideal work life. But that is not to say that owning my own business does not come with a plethora of challenges and demands that a regular job would not. As a business owner, I am CONSTANTLY working, even on a holiday, Christmas, New Years, family vacations, no matter the day, I am available and busy. That can be tough, but for me it is totally worth it.
I have worked a “regular” 9 to 5 job before, and though it was safe, secure and A LOT less stressful, I know that I work better when I am my own boss and can make my own schedule. As a business owner, I can choose how hard I want to work and how much I want to build my career, which is not possible with a regular job.
All in all, I could not be happier as a business owner and where this journey has brought me thus far.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I founded Plastics Media, a few years ago, a social media management agency, with a focus in the cosmetics industry.
I received my undergraduate’s degree in Advertising and Public Relations and have always been heavily involved on social media. After college, I moved to Miami and ended up managing a very busy Plastic Surgery practice. Once I decided that was not the career path for me, I combined my love, and education, of social media and knowledge of cosmetics to create Plastics Media.
My agency fully manages nearly 20 different med spas, injectors and surgeon’s social media pages. We create the content in office, edit, post, caption, literally EVERYTHING, for our clients! Social media is so important in the cosmetics industry, and these businesses HAVE to have a strong presence on their social media pages, if they want to run a successful practice.
I am so proud of how far I have come, from managing my very first account, to now having a brick-and-mortar office, managing employees and overseeing such a large number of social media pages. I pride myself in maintaining excellent quality for each of my clients, no matter how much my business grows. My clients always come first, and I make sure to take all the proper steps to make sure they are all happy.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I started Plastics Media right before the pandemic, and as we know the pandemic took a hit on EVERYONE, including the few clients I had at the time. Because of this, my clients cut their marketing spend and I found myself making less per month than even my car payment.
So… I took my phone and messaged everyone I knew, asking to see if someone was hiring for marketing. Of course, the job market was tough, most people were losing their job and hardly anyone was hiring. But somehow, I landed a full time, salary job, as marketing director for a company based in Miami and New Jersey.
It was tough for me to stop my dream of building a business, but there were bills to pay and no one knew how long the pandemic would last. Thankfully I could not have asked for a better company to work with, everyone was so kind, and I enjoyed my time working with them. Funny enough, this company ended up becoming a client of mine after I left the salary role, and I still continue to work with them to this day!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I initially started my company, I was not focused on one specific niche. I worked with businesses in all different areas, from pet products, fashion, hair products, modeling, CBD and more. After about one year in starting my company, I knew the best way to succeed was to focus on one market that I was really good at, and perfect it. This is why I now primarily focus on the cosmetics industry, with a few exceptions, and am extremely happy I decided to make this change within my business.
