We were lucky to catch up with Sofia Lopez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sofia, thanks for joining us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
My first job was thanks to my roomie at the time Anna. I had just graduated from college at the New York Film Academy and was struggling to fund a job. The SAG strike was happening and there wasn’t much to work on. So one random tuesday my roomie Anna told me she had some friends that we’re looking for the lead in a web series. The actress they had got covid and they needed someone ASAP. That same night I had a zoom call with the director and producer, they were the best! We did some cold reads and they made me do a few scenes. I really liked them and from the looks of it they liked me too! Two days later I was shooting a web series called “Rebel in Devils Shackles” at the Reverse Clock Entertainment Studios. It was ana amazing experience and I got to meet so many wonderful people.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born & raised in a small city in México. Singing and dancing have always been a part of my life. But when I entered the musical theatre group in high school I knew that’s where I belonged. So I started looking into acting schools because I wanted to learn more. I wanted to go to an acting summer camp to see if that was what I really wanted, in the summer of 2020 but because of covid it was canceled two weeks before. I simply decided on just going with the flow and thought to myself if ut didn’t work out it was fine. So in August 2021 I moved to LA by myself and start my dream of being an actress. I always dreamed of being on Disney Channel but I always saw it so far away, I never thought I could actually make it one day. I graduated from the New York Film Academy of Los Angeles with an associate’s degree in fine arts, Acting for Film in 2023. I have now worked of multiple short films from students from Chapman University to NYFA to LMU and so on… I recently worked on a film for LifeTime and it was so freaking cool! I’ve recently got into modeling and i’m excited to explore more on that field. It’s wonderful to see all my dreams coming true step by step, the journey can be slow but I’ll always keep going for me, and for all the other girls like me who have always dreamt of becoming stars. WE GOT THIS!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Coming from a small conservative city in México, you’re always told what’s right and what’s wrong. But it’s until you leave that place that you realize everyone & everything is different. I’ve had to learn to appreciate & be grateful for where I’m from but also take in all the new things this life has to offer. Meeting amazing talented people from all over the world with different believes & cultures & learning from them. Realizing people will always talk about you, wether it’s good or bad. I’ve learned to not care what people think anymore and just be myself 100%. Sometimes it’s hard or you doubt yourself but I feel like self love & confidence are one of the keys to make it in this industry.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I’ve always wondered this. I love to do many things, I love photography, fashion, makeup and many more things. So I have wondered what would it have been like if I had chosen something else… But know that I’m here and I’ve made it this far I’ve realized this is where I’m meant to be. God & the universe have led me here through every little choice I’ve made along the way. Yes it’s pretty hard but I know I have what it takes and I’m here now so I might as well just anjoy the journey and give it my all.
