Suliman , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?

Art runs in the family. I get it from those who grew up before me.
Do more research in areas that I didn’t understand or were weak in.
My imagination is a strong skill that leads me to great art creation.
Work, my former 9 to 5 was a big obstacle. I am now a full time artist. (Since 2021. Thanks to my lovely wife )

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Hello , My Name is Suliman Onque and I’m a multifaceted fine Artist and Muralist from Newark Nj. I specialize in original drawings, paintings, portraits, logos, graphic design , video editing/ content creating ,wearable art and comic book author /illustrator. Im a husband, father and grandfather. I come from a family if artists and creatives, I’m part of an artist group 3 The Art Way (mother Yvonne Onque, brother Samad Onque and myself Suliman Onque) I help my clients bring their imagination to reality “If you can imagine it, I can create it, artistically “ is my motto) So from beautifying buildings with inspirational images through murals to creating book covers that Pop with color for childrens books make for happy customers.
One of the thing that sets me apart from others is my willingness to “Collaborate with others in many different capacities. “It’s Not about Ego, It’s about how far WE Go!
I am most proud of they way clients have supported me and my family, now that I am a full time artist. To see how happy they are after I complete a project really warms my heart. The city of Newark, Newark Arts and my customers/clients have all helped me become a Thriving artist! (Big Thanks to my wife and family as well)

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?

My Mission and goal that continues to drive me on my journey is creating a great Legacy for my family. I want the art that I created to live forever. For my family and generations to come to benefit in such a way that all they will need to do is manage and share my art. I am also driven by the fact that I can be a THRIVING Artist not a starving artist. My plan is to show how I can make a better life for myself as well an enjoy it financially while I’m alive.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

The year was 2020. I worked for Newark Public School as a security officer. Once Covid struck I made the leap of faith to leave the job I had for over 20 years , To pursue a career as a Full time artist and start my own art company. SLIMSULI ART LLC. I have the full support of my wife, without her none of that would be possible. It was the BEST decision of my life!
