Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexa Jaye. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I ever completed was the first song I made entirely by myself. I wrote, produced, sang on, mixed, mastered and released the song last October of 2022, and realizing I didn’t need help to present a fully finished work to the world was incredibly gratifying and empowering. Especially as there are so few women in music production.
Alexa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Los Angeles-based artist/songwriter/producer primarily focused on making pop bops of all flavors—disco pop, dance pop, soul pop, power pop, dark cinematic pop—you name it! I work on various artist projects and collaborations aside from my own artist project, and I delight in creating something from nothing. I got into the industry after finishing a degree in music composition. I moved to New York and started a soul-pop duo with my bestie, all the while honing my songwriting and production chops. When I moved out to Los Angeles, I was finally ready to release my own music under Alexa Jaye.
When it comes to working with others, I’m a vocalist first, so my main offering to musicians and artists is a big pop voice for their project. I feel quite confident in my ability to deliver a broadcast quality vocal to my collaborators and clients.
I’m most proud of my ability (after about 10 years of doubt and fear) to finally produce and release songs 100% on my own. Other proud moments include hearing my music on TV for the first time, fully recouping a label advance within a few months of a project’s release (!), and learning how to show up online more authentically.
I’d describe my brand as playful, empowering, and colorful. I always ask myself, “How can I have the most fun right now?” And then I do that (it’s usually making pop bangers).
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My who reason for being is to empower women and girls. Especially those who have a creative spirit. I strugged with low self worth and low confidence for years and I can see how it held me back from my full creative potential for so long. I’m still working on it (self love is a life-long journey!), but if my music or content can help empower any young woman to step into their full authentic, creative truth, then I count that as a big win.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
A few books that altered my brain chemistry (and approach to music and life):
-Atomic Habits by James Clear
-The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron
-The War of Art by Steven Pressfield
-Big Magic by Liz Gilbert
-Letting Go by David Hawkins
A podcast that I listen to religiously for creative advice is “Herby House” by Qveen Herby and Jedi Nick. Qveen Herby is an independent artist who has been through so much in the music industry and they both have wisdom for days.
Other notable creative podcasts I listen to include “And the Writer Is…” from Ross Golan, “Creative Juice” by Indepreneur, “The Chase Jarvis Live Show,” and “The Music Industry Podcast” by burstimo.
