We recently connected with ITing Kao and have shared our conversation below.
ITing, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
This is a difficult question for me to answer. Each piece is a unique time capsule, preserving my emotions, experiences, and reflections from that particular moment in my life. However, there are two specific pieces I’d like to talk about.
Let’s begin with “The Explorer,” a project I worked on during the pandemic in 2020-2021. “The Explorer” is a short 3D animated film that also serves as a dark comedy. Amidst an exploratory journey to another planet, a young explorer named Bob finds himself gradually losing what makes him unique. The film’s aesthetic is bright, playful, and toy-like, providing an ironic contrast to the underlying dark tone of the story. This juxtaposition creates a viewing experience that is both complex and entertaining.
In this era of information explosion, even if we don’t actively seek information, it continues to inundate our lives. How to maintain one’s sense of self in such a society, and more importantly, to know who we truly are, is not an easy task. Humans are easily influenced by external factors, and we navigate each day according to the rules of this society. Gradually, we may find ourselves being pulled into the vortex. Am I still me, or just another version of you, merely another clone?
The next project I would like to discuss is “A Wedding Tale.” This is a short animated film I created at the end of 2022. The film serves as a heartfelt wedding gift for my dear sister and her charming groom. Follow the enchanting tale of an accountant and a pilot as they embark on a magical journey of romance. This animation is a token of my warmest wishes for a lifetime of happiness and cherished memories.
This film is not only a gift for my sister; it is also a gift for myself. I remember the wonderful feeling of being completely immersed in creating this film. It was a fantastic experience within that work zone. Throughout the process of creating this, it reminded me how much I love crafting work and animation. When the film was finished, presenting this blessing at my sister’s wedding and feeling the emotions during its screening was truly rewarding.

ITing, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Creative Designer and Animator born in Taipei, Taiwan, currently living and working in New York. My primary focus is on 3D design. My style involves capturing distinctive humor, conveying a sense of joy, and providing aesthetic pleasure for my viewers. While residing in New York, I continuously push my creative boundaries, exploring various styles and methods to create more appealing artwork. Through my works, I aim to bring joy and laughter to diverse audiences.
I specialize in many 3D anamorphic billboard projects. A 3D anamorphic billboard is an advertising display that utilizes anamorphic art or design to create a three-dimensional illusion when viewed from a specific angle. I have assisted numerous corporations in selling their products and promoting them with impactful visuals that seem to come to life. Understanding clients’ needs, conducting research on the brand and product, and devising optimal solutions to overcome potential issues are integral parts of my approach.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the continual process of self-discovery and expressing my true self through my work. Through the creative process, I have to delve into the depths of my emotions and sensitivities, putting a genuine part of myself into my work. This act of creation allows my fragility and vulnerabilities to become strengths, forming a unique way of self-expression. The creative journey serves as a mirror, reflecting not only my artistic abilities but also forcing me to confront and embrace my weaknesses. It’s a process of self-reflection, where honesty is key—being true to myself and the art I create.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Creating art often means working alone, deep in my own thoughts and feelings, which can feel isolating. It’s a delicate balance – thinking critically about my work without getting lost in self-doubt. Our imagination tends to make us worry more than necessary.
Patience is a key virtue in the creative journey. Each step forward is a deliberate and often time-consuming process, requiring dedication and perseverance. Sometimes, it’s challenging to look at the works I’ve created objectively, as I immediately notice flaws that others might not see. This self-critical perspective is both a strength and a struggle, contributing to the continuous refinement of my craft.
Keeping my passion alive is important, but it can wear out over time or due to work pressure. Finding the right balance between creating what I love and meeting commercial demands is an ongoing struggle. It’s not always easy to reconcile making meaningful art with the need to earn a living.
In essence, being creative involves navigating through these challenges. I share this to provide a better understanding of the unique experiences and difficulties that come with the creative journey.
