We recently connected with Tay Moore and have shared our conversation below.
Tay, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
“My mission is rooted in my own personal journey with self confidence and low self-esteem. Although I have never dealt with skin problems , I understand the impact that skin issues can have on one’s confidence and overall well-being. That’s why I am dedicated to providing high-quality skin care solutions that not only address the physical symptoms but also uplift and empower my clients helping them feel confident and beautiful in their own skin.” That is part of the reason why I became a Licensed Esthetician, I wanted to be able to make that change in someone’s life.

Tay, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Absolutely! So my name is Teja or Tay and around the end of 2017 I was talking to my mom one day and she mentioned how she always wanted to be a esthetician and that I would be great at it, I didn’t really know what an esthetician was so I researched it and I knew immediately that was what I wanted to do but shortly after I became pregnant and felt like I couldn’t pursue my dreams anymore so I let the idea go. After I had the baby post partum hit me real bad and I started to lose myself. After I reflected on a lot of things I realized that I owe it to myself and my daughter to go back to school and pursue my dreams of becoming a licensed esthetician. I started the program in May of 2020 during the pandemic and became licensed in July of 2021! Not only am I licensed esthetician but I am a mom to 3 children that my husband and I have between the both of us.
My business is called Moore Than Skin Esthetics and I specialize in corrective skincare, acne prevention and pigmentation. I am actually the only WOC certified acne specialist in my area. I offer acne treatments, custom facials, dermaplaning, hydradermabrasion, nano infusion and chemical peels. I will soon be offering microneedling and more in depth chemical peels.
There are several things that makes me stand out from others. For starters I believe that what sets me apart is the fact that I am a WOC. I know and understand our skin. Also I have found that where I am located many that are in the same industry all do the same things and there isn’t anything wrong with that but for me I knew I wanted to stand out and I knew I wanted to target a certain clientele so I furthered my education with trainings and getting certified in things that I didn’t see locally. I knew I wanted to be the problem solver for my clients, I wanted my brand to be known for providing quality service and optimal results.
I think for me the thing that I am most proud of is seeing how far my brand has come since I first started it. There has been many challenges but with each challenge my brand only got better. I went from barely having any clients to have now having serviced over 100 and developing a loyal clientele. That is definitely something to be proud of.
I first want to thank my clients, without them I wouldn’t have a business, so I am very grateful to them for choosing me as their esthetician. For my current clients and potential clients I really want them to know that I take the overall health of their skin very seriously. I want nothing more than to see them regain their confidence and to see the beauty in their skin regardless of how it is at that time. I want my clients to know that they are heard, their concerns are my priority and lastly I want them to know that my brand will always ensure that they are getting quality service that will also provide results!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I first started out in this industry I was working at a local salon, during my time there I was able to gain experience and develop relationships with clients. I always knew I wanted to go solo but while I was there I took my position very seriously and always respected the establishment and the clients that came with it. After being there for a year I was wrongfully let go and later found out about the false allegations that were told about me. I remember feeling so hurt and so disappointed. But I also remember feeling a fire that lit in me shortly after that happened. Less than 2 months of being let go I was able to open up my home studio and I started gaining clients all on my own. The situation had affected me mentally and emotionally, especially because it was an attack on my character but it was the best thing that could happen to me. It really made me the esthetician that I am today. Whenever I reflect on that situation I think about the resilience I had ,I was so aware of what had taken place and instead of letting it deter me away from reaching my goals I started to think of ways to tackle what was in front of me and I was able to emerge and move forward. I had my home studio for 2 years and now I rent out a suite and from there will be even BIGGER things!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I’ve always believed that the best marketing tool is word of mouth. Each time a new client comes to me I let them know to tell others about me and what I specialize in, I also make sure that my clients leave honest reviews on their experience with me. Outside of using word of mouth I would say that social media has also helped me in growing my clientele. Whenever I post I make sure that I am showcasing my skills so clients can see that I give results. Also I make sure that I am using hashtags that others would use when looking for an esthetician. I know this works because several of my clients now have told me they found me on social media and they love my work.
