We were lucky to catch up with Matt Leighty recently and have shared our conversation below.
Matt, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
GrantFlow is driven by a clear and powerful mission: to help people do more good, more easily. This is achieved by our focus on simplifying the grant process. We understand that non-profits and community organizations are at the forefront of creating positive change, but often, the complex and time-consuming nature of grant applications can be a significant hurdle.
Our goal is to remove this obstacle. By making grant writing more accessible and less daunting, we enable these organizations to focus their energy and resources on what they do best – serving their communities and advancing their causes. We’re not just streamlining a process; we’re empowering change-makers to amplify their impact without being bogged down by the intricacies of funding applications.
In essence, GrantFlow embodies the principle that doing good shouldn’t be hard. Our services are designed to shoulder the burden of grant writing, offering expertise, efficiency, and ease. This way, those dedicated to making a difference can do so with more focus, more resources, and ultimately, more success.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m part of a team that founded GrantFlow, a company rooted in the belief that making a positive impact should be simpler. Our journey into this field was driven by a clear need: non-profits, essential to our communities, were often overwhelmed by the complex and time-consuming grant application process. Recognizing this, we set out to create a solution that would empower these organizations to focus more on their impactful work and less on the daunting task of securing funding.
GrantFlow provides a comprehensive suite of services designed to streamline the grant writing process. Our offerings include grant strategy development, prospecting, budgeting, research, and reporting. One of our key innovations is the GrantFlow software, which helps track and manage grants, making the entire process more efficient and accessible.
The problem we solve is twofold. Firstly, we address the complexity and expertise required in grant writing, which can be a significant barrier for many non-profits. Secondly, we tackle the issue of time – our services free up valuable resources, allowing non-profits to devote more attention to their core mission.
What sets us apart is our holistic approach. We don’t just offer a service; we provide a partnership. Our team’s background in both the non-profit sector and technical fields allows us to understand the unique challenges and needs of our clients. The integration of AI into our methodology is a testament to our commitment to innovation, making our services more adaptable and effective for a wide range of non-profits.
While we mention that we’ve successfully raised more than $155 million for our partners, I’m most proud of the tangible impact our work has had on communities. Every successful grant we’ve helped secure translates into real-world benefits, from educational programs and environmental initiatives to health and social services. It’s rewarding to see our efforts amplify the reach and effectiveness of these vital organizations.
For potential clients, followers, or fans, I want them to know that GrantFlow is more than a company – it’s a mission-driven partner dedicated to amplifying positive change. We’re committed to making the grant application process as painless as possible, so our clients can continue doing the incredible work that makes our world a better place. At GrantFlow, we believe in empowering those who do good to do more good, more easily.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Meeting my co-founder and business partner, Neil Patel, was a turning point in the journey of creating GrantFlow. Our meeting was not just a chance encounter, but a confluence of shared concerns and ambitions to make a meaningful impact in the non-profit sector.
Neil approached me initially as someone looking for grants for a project he was working on. In my role as a grant writer, I often find myself in the position of balancing people’s expectations with the realities of the grant world. It’s a common misconception that grants are an easy solution for funding, but in truth, they are more suited for established organizations with 501(c)(3) status and a solid track record.
During our conversation, I explained to Neil the intricacies and challenges of securing grants. His reaction to the complexity of the process was a lightbulb moment for both of us. It led me to share with him a broader perspective on the array of issues plaguing the non-profit industry, beyond just the grant application process.
This exchange of ideas and insights was the catalyst for our collaboration. Neil, along with his brother Sailesh, brought a fresh, tech-savvy approach to the table. We combined our strengths – my expertise in grant writing and their technological acumen – to develop a software program aimed at solving many of the problems faced by non-profits.
But we didn’t stop there. We also refined and enhanced my grant writing methodology, turning it into a teachable format. This allowed us to extend our reach, empowering other individuals and organizations to navigate the grant world more effectively.
The growth that followed our partnership has been incredibly fulfilling. It’s not just about business success; it’s about the impact we’re able to make. Helping more non-profits secure the funding they need means more community projects come to life, more people in need receive help, and more positive change is fostered in society.
In essence, meeting Neil was more than finding a business partner; it was finding a kindred spirit in the quest to make the world a little better through our work. Our collaboration is a daily reminder of how bringing different perspectives and skills together can lead to innovative solutions and meaningful work.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The most effective source of new clients for us at GrantFlow has indeed been through referrals from our existing clients. Our success in attracting new clients through word of mouth is deeply rooted in the quality of our work and the trust we’ve built with our existing clients. Non-profits value genuine, proven solutions, and when they find something that works, they’re eager to share it with others who can benefit. This is especially true in an industry where resources are often limited, and finding efficient, reliable help can make a significant difference.
A unique aspect of the non-profit sector is the interconnectedness of its professionals. Board members often serve on multiple boards, while development directors and executive directors frequently move between organizations. This creates a network where experiences and resources are shared widely, including recommendations for services like ours. When we make a positive impact with one organization, it’s often the case that our name is passed along to others.
Furthermore, the non-profit world is notably collaborative rather than competitive. People involved in this sector are primarily driven by a desire to support and uplift their communities. When they find tools or services that enhance their ability to do so, such as our grant writing and management solutions, they are naturally inclined to share this with others in the community. This ethos of collaboration and mutual support has been instrumental in our growth and continued success.
