Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jermaine Clark. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jermaine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t consider this a problem as much as a learning curve. In the initial stages of transitioning to a full-time artist, I found myself lacking structure. Having previously balanced a corporate job with my artistic pursuits, my time was meticulously planned. However, upon leaving the 9-5 routine, I was unexpectedly faced with a lot of free time, which I hadn’t anticipated. Despite my long-standing dream of dedicating myself to art full-time, I soon realized the challenge of managing this newfound freedom, as it posed the risk of burnout and neglecting other aspects of life. To combat this, I prioritized establishing a daily routine to prevent stagnation and instill a sense of purpose. Having a routine not only aids in time management and consistency but also promotes a healthier work-life balance. It also grants me the freedom and pride of being my own boss, that I’ve always yearned for. .
Jermaine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Raised in St. Louis, my upbringing in the inner city inspired me to turn to painting as a means of creative expression. The essence of my work reflects a desire for freedom of expression and a passion for art, which I aim to share with others.
Throughout my artistic journey, I’ve remained committed to pushing boundaries and exploring various styles, from abstract paintings to large-scale murals. Each project I undertake is approached with a fresh perspective, resulting in a distinct creation every time. After completing formal training at Alabama A&M and earning a bachelor’s degree in fine art, I relocated to Atlanta to pursue my artistic career.
Having honed my skills, I pride myself on being able to seamlessly integrate a clients vision with my artistic ability. I aim not only to meet expectations but to exceed them, leaving a lasting impression that resonates with both the client and the community. Whether it’s a commercial space, residential, or public installation, I bring a commitment to excellence and a dedication to creating transformative experiences through art.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A pivotal moment in my business journey occurred when I shifted focus from gallery representation and art shows to painting murals. Initially, showcasing my paintings and gaining recognition for my art was my priority. While this phase taught me valuable lessons, it did not provide the financial stability I sought. Although I had painted a few murals before, it wasn’t until I connected with my good friend and mentor, Peter Ferrari, that I truly grasped the business side of mural painting. Assisting him opened my eyes to a new world of opportunities as a working artist.
This experience marked a turning point for me, igniting a newfound understanding and direction. As an undergraduate art student, I had not been taught how to sustainably earn a living from my art. Being in Peter’s presence, witnessing his professionalism, and learning from his expertise were transformative. Now equipped with a clearer vision, I am better able to structure my business, seek lucrative opportunities, and still dedicate time to my art.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A story that continues to showcase my resilience is ongoing. It began in my childhood, where I faced the struggles of growing up in a low-income household and navigating various hardships. This journey persists into adulthood, marked by the challenges of pursuing a career path with no clear blueprint. Despite constantly encountering adversity, I am fueled by my unwavering faith, passion, and the support of loved ones. I believe that life presents obstacles to everyone, and there are inevitable moments of wanting to give up. However, it’s the perseverance through these trials that truly define us and show us how strong we really are.
