We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Umberto Lukama. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Umberto below.
Umberto, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I strongly wish I had initiated my creative journey earlier. Despite having a natural inclination for creativity as a child, it lacked encouragement. Once I gained the ability to tap into my creative side and began earnestly learning about the craft, I committed wholeheartedly. However, I acknowledge that everything unfolds according to God’s timing, and I find myself precisely where I am meant to be in my creative journey.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My introduction to photography occurred during my high school years when I enrolled in a film photography class. The enchanting process of developing film captured my interest, sparking a profound love for storytelling through visuals. Subsequently, I acquired a camera from a second-hand store during college, initially delving into landscape photography. My journey progressed to portraits of family and friends, eventually extending to church photography.
Despite these diverse styles, each facet of photography equipped me with valuable skills. Presently, I find myself gravitating towards editorial photography, a style that allows my creativity to flourish to its fullest extent. By providing ample space for my creativity to thrive, I consistently produce fresh and inspiring work. Constantly challenging myself to surpass previous projects, I prioritize creating work that not only exceeds expectations but also resonates with my inspiration and vision.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most fulfilling aspects of being an artist or creative professional is witnessing the transformation of an initial idea into a tangible reality through thoughtful execution. It is immensely gratifying to then unveil the finished product to the world and observe the diverse reactions it elicits.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I cultivate my social media audience authentically, recognizing the convenience of emulating popular trends but advocating for the creation of original ideas. Establishing a unique identity forms the foundation for growth. In my humble opinion, this approach attracts individuals who genuinely appreciate your work and resonate with your artistic style. While it may take time, success lies in the journey of exploration. Embrace the courage to stand out with your unconventional ideas, as someone out there is undoubtedly finding inspiration in your work.
