We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeremie Tyler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jeremie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Sometimes I wish I had gotten my license in cosmetology earlier on in my life. But sometimes things happen in the timing they are meant to, instead of when we’d like it to. Having waited until my late 20’s gave me the gift of a more adult understanding of the work a lifelong career entails. I’m proud of the struggles and many jobs that brought me to the place I am in now. Difficulties don’t feel like mountains to move the way they use to. Although things can be difficult I never feel I am unable to achieve what I work hard for now.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Jeremie Tyler. I grew up in central Jersey and I am now 28 years old. I have always loved art, music, and anything that allowed me to express myself. Being the youngest of 4 sisters, as well as a family full of mainly women I had the privilege of being surrounded by all forms of beauty. I quickly in my teenage years became the one to come to for makeup and hair help.
I had known even then I wanted a life that allowed me to be surrounded by art and helping people to feel beautiful and confident.
I had first in my early 20’s gotten into modeling and some advertising. I spent many weekends going to photographer meet ups in places such as the art factory, and building my portfolio with local creatives.
Though modeling will always be something I enjoy and spend time a part of, I had always wanted to become a stylist. The pandemic had brought a clear opportunity for me to work on obtaining my cosmetology license.
Now having my license I sought out a salon with creatives that inspire me and education to help me grow and flourish.
I am now in Gerber Salon in Keyport New Jersey honing my craft. It has always been important to me to have a career that is emotionally fulfilling and empowering. For me becoming a stylist is just that’s. To see someone’s face light up because they feel beautiful is one of the best feelings to be a part of. Hair is a part of creating living art that gets to walk out and be seen by the world. It’s an ever changing evolving craft that will always have lessons to teach.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I was just turning 21 I was happy to take on any modeling opportunities given to me. I felt empowered to be in my own skin seeing the amazing images I was able to take part in creating. As I grew older I had started to feel less fulfilled and wanted to be more involved behind the scenes. Collaborating on set dressing, clothing, and styling. Not to say I need to take on control, but I myself have always had creative ideas and concepts I wanted to see come to fruition.
I then went on to look at local groups online of creatives to work with and it opened a world of amazing friendships along with it. Collaborating on creative concepts and images brought on what I knew was my need for a career that took me out of my comfort zone and into the salon I’m in now.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Talk about us. Talk about the people you admire in the creative industry. If you don’t have the ability to purchase art or services at the moment that is okay.
We live in an age where there are so many ways to spread support and love. Share someone’s work to your story, give it a like, comment, and talk about creatives that you admire. Word of mouth is a real unsung hero even in a time of so much technology. To show support does not always need to be a monetary transaction. If you are unsure where to start there are usually town pages and county publications that help to give more exposure to local creatives!
