We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sam3dy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sam3dy below.
Hi Sam3dy, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Sooner than expected. Graduating from college, I felt compelled to utilize my degree after investing so much effort into earning it. However, my inner creativity struggled to find expression amidst the demands of everyday life. In hindsight, focusing on my passions earlier could have provided a stronger foundation, but I also acknowledge the financial risks associated with pursuing artistic endeavors. Now, I’m grateful to be pursuing my creative dreams with the stability to support myself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My life story was destined for hardship from the beginning. A pregnant mother fleeing gunfire amidst the chaos of war, immigrant parents struggling to make ends meet in a new country. Born in the aftermath of Cambodia’s killing fields, I’ve faced adversity head-on, making the most of every opportunity life has presented.
Art became my first love—drawing and painting were my early passions. As time went on, I delved into writing stories and poems, which eventually evolved into spoken word and music. But my creative journey didn’t stop there; I ventured into producing short films and comedy sketches. It’s safe to say I may have ADHD, as I find myself drawn to multiple artistic pursuits simultaneously.
You can discover my music on all streaming platforms under the name Sam3dy. Influenced by southern hip-hop and proud of my Atlanta roots, I aim to transport listeners to an era where lyricism and storytelling took center stage, free from the current trend of mumbled singing.
Another creative outlet of mine can be found on YouTube under the channel AffirmativeActionHeroes. Our mission is to challenge stereotypes by reimagining traditional white characters with minority counterparts, using humor as a tool to dismantle racism one laugh at a time.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The finished product is akin to watching a child you’ve nurtured from birth stride confidently across the graduation stage, ready to conquer the world. It’s a tangible reminder of a moment in time when collaboration and effort culminated in something extraordinary. It’s unforgettable. Moreover, it becomes your legacy, a testament to your existence that persists long after you’re gone, ensuring others remember and know your impact.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having absolute freedom, without any limitations, is truly liberating. There are no rules constraining what I can create. My imagination knows no bounds, allowing me to push the boundaries of possibility. It’s a beautiful notion because my mind is constantly expanding, eager to absorb knowledge and insights from the ever-changing world around me.
