Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cecilia Lueza. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cecilia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I believe artists are born with the need to express themselves by creating something that’s purely visual and I’m not exception. I went to art school to gain my formal training in fine arts. My dream at that time as an art student was to exhibit my work in the prestigious art galleries and art fairs throughout the world. As soon as I moved to the United States, my perspective completely changed and my life as a professional public artist began to take shape.
Over twenty years ago I came to realize that art can have a greater and perhaps a more lasting impact if it is taken outside the confines of the gallery’s walls and it is shared with an entire community. I also realized that art has the power to transform and activate public spaces while instilling meaning and also creating memorable experiences for all. And that’s how I ventured into the realm of public art, a challenging yet noble profession that requires courage, passion, patience and perseverance.
Cecilia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My goal as an artist is to create visually engaging public art that enhances our environment, transforms the landscape, engages the public, builds community, and creates pedestrian friendly experiences.
Throughout my career, we have intensely explored a wide range of artistic media including mural art, sculpture and monumental public art installations. My work is a personal expression of my lifelong fascination with the beauty of nature, the visual effects of color, and the concepts of space, movement and transition. Florida with its natural beauty, colors and brightness is a constant source of inspiration for my work.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the things I love the most about being a public artist is traveling all across the country. You never know what a new project will bring. New places and people to meet and new challenges filled with wonderful memories to treasure along the way. Every trip is different and even when you think you have it all planned out, unexpected events can always be found around the corner. In the end it’s all worth it because we are connecting with the public through our work while providing an element of beauty, meaning and joy to a city that we may not belong to but once there we instantly become a part of. And in turn it becomes a part of our history.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
This powerful paragraph by Rollo May is the answer: “Creativity is a yearning for immortality. We human beings know that we must die. We have, strangely enough, a word for death. We know each of us must develop the courage to confront death. Yet we also must rebel and struggle against it. Creativity comes from this struggle.”
