We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Audrey Harris. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Audrey below.
Audrey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I want to be remember for bringing light into a room, and making people feel comfortable. I want to be known for working unto the Lord, and not just for profit or networking.
Audrey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got my first DSLR when I was 17 years old. I have loved art since I was a little girl, my entire family were artist and good in their crafts whether is was music, drawing, pottery, painting, and it took me awhile to find where I shined until I found photography. It started out as a hobby for me, that I picked up here and there until I had two major life events. The same year I had my first child at 22, I lost my brother. I realized quickly when you lose someone, one of the most import tangible memories you have left to see is photos, at the same time I was wanting to capture every changing feature of my now growing son. These realizations pushed me to go outside my comfort zone and capture memories for others. I feel called to do this, and I’m so thankful I made the leap. Over the years I have gotten to be part of so many vulnerable, precious, life changing moments with this career. I’ve captured, end of life, beginning of life, Weddings, engagements, captured families grow, children graduate, people build their businesses, and it is the biggest privilege to be trusted and part of such huge milestones in other peoples lives. I think something I am most proud of is building my business from word of mouth. I took my time, treated my clients how I would want to be treated, and I’ve always been true to myself, and God has really blessed my business. I’m Thankful that through the success of my business I am able to give, when I feel called to give. I want every client to leave knowing that I feel so honored to be the one to capture the special moment in their life, and I don’t take it lightly.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started out with a crop sensor canon and a nifty 50 with an old Toshiba laptop my husband used for his college classes. Every photo I edited took so long just to load in Lightroom and I would have to send it to my phone to make sure the coloring was right, because I did not have the funds to get a new computer, or even buy something to correct the coloring. I slowly built my business and as I started to make a little money I would invest little by little back into my business, I got a 13 inch Mac book pro and used that a couple years, I got an old version Sony full frame camera, then was able to upgrade to a newer version as I made more money. I have been slow and meticulous about every purchase. I spend hours researching everything I purchase to make sure it is the best decision financially and for my business, it has served me well.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I avoided Instagram for the first few years of my business, and though I’m not quite as active as I probably should be, it is such a wonderful resource, and great for networking, learning, encouragement, and reaching new clients!
