We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Timothy Ramirez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Timothy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
It was way back in elementary school when I knew I had an aspiration to pursue a career that involved creativity. I began to write short stories, poetry and pros, even as a teen. When I would audition for a role in a theatre production, I would almost always land a role. By my last years of high school, I was landing Lead roles and was even scouted out when I played the King of Siam in The King and I.
I began adapting theatrical scripts to film and in my senior year, I wrote and Directed a One-Act Play for the state competition in Arizona. It was performed at the University of Arizona and we won first place over both high school and college entries.
During school, I had taken up work in the food business to help with school expenses. About my third year at A.S.U. I was studying Business Administration when I got a call from a friend telling me about a golden opportunity to take my cooking skills to the next level. It was a cooking audition for a coveted role as Apprentice Chef at a Private Country Club. The kitchen was staffed with Master Chefs from Europe and I had to beat out about 70+ applicants and aspiring Chefs. After winning that challenge, I spent the next four years of my life as apprentice, and it led to my career long adventure in the world of fine dining.
Guess you could say I was hell bent on doing Anything Creative with my life, so I relentlessly followed my dreams.
Timothy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A few years ago, I decided to get back to my first love, theater and writing, so I challenged myself to learn the art of screenwriting. Since then, I have written several screenplays and books. My latest work, a dark comedy screenplay that was co-written by my writing partner and wife, has recently been picked up an L.A. Entertainment Firm to help package and pitch the story to Production companies and Investors. After a rewarding career in culinary, I also began an International Food & Beverage Consulting firm. I’ve had the luxury of travel and have forged great relationships both domestic and abroad, with clients in Italy, Spain and Lebanon. It’s given me an opportunity to have working sabbaticals in some of the finest kitchens around the world, and to share the best practices I learned along the way. Visit: timothyramirezconsulting.com
The driving force in all my creative endeavors has been a passion for learning and sharing the love of my experiences with anyone interested in exploring new adventures, either in cuisine, the film industry or both. Currently in development, is a story about an unassuming Chef that took the world of fine dining by surprise, then fostered a movement to teach the socially less fortunate to pursue their dreams.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In the course of more than 40 years in the culinary world, I have had to overcome the physical and mental challenges that every Chef encounters. From the daily stress of the industry, to workplace injuries, both physical and mental, I have mentored and counseled Chefs in the art of staying physically fit, mentally strong and keeping their creative offerings relevant to today. On the surface, the business of fine dining appears to be a glamorous, exciting and rewarding career choice. The reality is that being a Chef is like being a professional athlete; there are good days and bad days, but the one thing you can count on is the daily challenge of a full-body workout, being mentally stressed to a point of break down, and ironically, avoiding hunger and dehydration.
As for the writing and film industry; one has to be in it for the long haul, have thick skin to withstand the number of No’s you will hear in a day, and have the patience of Job in developing projects and seeing your work come to fruition. Writing is a lonely introvert’s work, 90 % procrastination, and you have to be self-motivated and inspired with what you do.
It’s also very much about building relationships, networking, and putting yourself out there and vulnerable to the opinions of your audience.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Currently I have 10 writing works in process, but my ultimate goal is to see any of my screenplays on the big screen or to have my books adapted to film. My wife says I see everything in life as a movie, and I never stop the creative process. Sometimes I’ll even wake up at 3 a.m. and have to jot down the latest idea, so I can remember and flesh it out at another time. My passion project is the true story of my Parent’s legacy, No Misfortunate Son. It depicts the incredible life challenges they both had to overcome to survive, and the legacy of love they shared with the world. The Synopsis and website are available for anyone to see.
