Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Flewelling. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jessica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The beginning of Hooded Beauty started back in 2014. During this time, I really wanted to get better at my makeup, so I turned to YouTube. I would watch countless of tutorials and follow videos step by step, but for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why my eye makeup never looked like the person in the video. I also discovered my passion for makeup during this time. Fast forward a couple years I pursued a career in Makeup Artistry and I had an ‘ah ha’ moment when I learnt about eye shapes. I had realized I have hooded eyes. As a makeup artist I train and teach other women how to do their makeup. I would have clients who also had hooded eyes and they would express to me their challenges when it came to their eye makeup. Then the idea came to me, what there was a beauty brand that catered to individuals with hooded eyes. A brand that understands the unique challenges of having hooded eyes and also celebrates having them. Hooded Beauty was born! There’s this saying ‘be the change you wish to see’ – so I did just that.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hooded Beauty was created to provide beauty solutions for women’s with hooded eyes. I know first hand the makeup challenges that come along with having hooded eyes, so I wanted to create a brand that celebrates my unique eye shape. We currently have our Hoodie Collection – a curated collection of false eyelashes that compliment hooded eyes.
As simple as it may sound, I’m most proud of the launch of Hooded Beauty this past fall. I can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my business is social media. Social media play a big part in my business. It has allowed me to not only gain customers and clientele it’s also allowed me to network and meet people I feel like I’d have never connect with otherwise. Because of social media I’ve had the opportunity to work on tour for a well known musician and had my work on Television. You never know who may come across your business!
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
I had to go through the process of finding a manufacture for my products. During this process I was looking for a vendor who had great communication, good quality products, and who was within my budget. I did A LOT of research to find the right one. I first started with a list of vendors who came recommended to me by my business coach/mentor. I had a list of the same questions I would ask each one such as lead time, MOQ, cost per unit, etc. From there, I placed an order for samples to see the product in person and to test out. I did this with quite a few vendors until I found the right one.
