We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lindsay Lange a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lindsay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I first knew I wanted to pursue art somehow in my life when I was a child and into my teen years, but was never really sure how to make it work for me. I grew up painting and drawing since I was old enough to hold a brush. I took many art classes as a child and into high school, followed by filling my college electives with art classes. I stepped back from it for a bit in my 20’s as I went to college to study business & finance instead and worked for quite a few years in corporate accounting. I never lost sight of that dream to become a full time artist though.
When I had my 2 sons I ended up leaving my then career to stay home and care for them. It was then that I realized this is the perfect time to make this goal finally work for me. I had the time, the flexibility, and the ability to take it step by step. I spent a lot of time researching and self teaching but also have brought a lot of my business background with me into this journey. I also ended up falling in love with mural work, which has been a huge asset to being able to make a full time living off of my artistic ability. I’m so happy I took the time to find a way for an art career to work for me and never gave up on this goal.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a mixed media visual artist and muralist. I create original paintings as well as commissions in various mediums including acrylic, oil, watercolor and aerosol. I also create and install custom murals in both commercial and residential spaces.
In regards to my original art, which I consider my “personal”, I aim to create immersive art exhibition experiences. My original artwork is my soul. It comes from my heart, I am the writer with paint and I consider these exhibitions my stories.
On the contrary, murals are my business. One thing I am most proud of that I bring to my clients is a communicative, personal experience. I pride myself in not only the workmanship of the product I’m creating but also the trust and relationship I’m building with my customers. I aim to be versatile, easy to speak to, and understanding of their needs while also practicing good business. I think this is where my business background always shows. I have found it imperative to my business and have noticed a vast increase in my customer loyalty, feedback and recommendations by paying attention to these aspects.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To me, the most rewarding aspect about being an artist is my ability to not only bring joy and evoke thought into the viewers, but also my ability to shed light. As artists we have the ability to speak to peoples minds without words. I am a firm believer that there are some who visually understand more than they may understand with words or sound. To be able to communicate to the pieces of people where words don’t strike chords is a special sort of magic. Every day I feel honored that I get the chance to communicate with people in this way.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
In regards to resources, I never knew the importance and value of local communities and art councils. Recently in the past year and a half I have come into connection with a few local art councils who have been pivotal to my success and growth. They have taught me, harbored my ability, and lead me to opportunities I would not have known existed. Any new artists on the scene, I always suggest touching base with a local art council as well as really connecting to your community. This includes other artists as well. I have always felt that there is so much more good in being one with your fellow artists than to treat them as a competition. The support from your local peers will raise you all higher in your goals and dreams.
