We were lucky to catch up with Kumari Mullin recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kumari, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?

In 1988 I was a civil rights attorney when my father died suddenly of lung cancer, which led me on a quest to understand death and dying and to ease suffering. I took a course in Reiki energy healing which rocked my world, and during class I received a very direct internal message: “this is your path.”

Very shortly afterward I left the law, as I believed these kinds of messages couldn’t be ignored. But I had no income, no savings and a ton of debt, and most importantly, no clients! And not a clue where to get started.

One day I was so desperate, I needed to start somewhere. So I thought, well, if I am going to treat clients, I need a massage table. I looked up in the Yellow Pages (this was way before google) under Massage, and my gaze fell upon a Marriage and Family therapist ad. Not what I was looking for at all, so I kept searching. But somehow I was drawn back to that ad, as I couldn’t find any trace of where to buy a massage table.

As it turns out, the psychiatrist had a satellite office in my town. Since I had run out of ideas, I decided to call the psychiatrist office and I got the voicemail. I left several messages and no one every returned my calls. A few weeks went by and I didn’t know what else to do, so I went in person. Disappointingly no one was there, but I left a note. This felt like my last shot as I was becoming increasingly discouraged.

Persistence paid off. Finally a few days later, I did receive a call back and went in for an interview. As fate would have it, the psychiatrist was very forward thinking and wanted to offer her patients more holistic modalities, instead of only pharmaceutical drugs. She offered to talk to her clients and make referrals and gave me a treatment room to see them in, complete with a table!

Aside from offering me a way to finally find clients and make some money, which was huge, it was also extremely legitimizing that a doctor was backing my very woo-woo and largely unheard of modality. One of the first clients I saw shared after the session that she felt so much better, but still had a pain in her back. “What is that about?” she asked. Intuitively I got that it had to do with her mother, but I was totally new to sharing these insights and kept it to myself. I knew absolutely nothing about her life and didn’t want to get it wrong. But she persisted in asking me about this burning pain she had for years that wouldn’t go away.

Finally I got the nerve up to share that this pain had to do with her mother, and she totally denied that was possible. “I have a great relationship with my mom, except for that one incident that I put on the back burner for years.”

“The ‘back burner,’ you say? Tell me more” I coaxed. The woman shared that her mother had kept her father’s funeral under wraps and prevented her from attending. My client said it “was unforgivable, but I had to put that on the back burner and move on.”

I shared that forgiveness is not about letting bad behavior go without consequences, but about not carrying the anger, hurt and resentment forward in your own being which can impact you physically. She wasn’t impressed. “I just can’t talk to my mom about this.” But she came back for a second session, and when I asked her about her back pain, she didn’t even recall that she had any for years! It turns out she did have a conversation with her mother about her father’s funeral, and realized the back pain had vanished!

This was so validating for me on two levels: one that the Reiki energy healing helped her but secondly, that I gained confidence to share my intuitive hits about why the body was holding onto pain, even when the client argued with my assessment! And who doesn’t love the poetic way the mind/body connection was manifesting?

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

I am a spiritual teacher, Reiki Master teacher, energy alchemist and best-selling author, For the past 33 years, I studied and lived with world renowned meditation masters, energy healers and animal communicators.

So-called miracles have become the norm, not just for me, but for the thousands I have taught, as they learn to manage their energy and mindset, through connecting to their true essence.

The art of energy alchemy is the ability to transform one state into another, for example from stressed to serene, or from depressed and ill to energized and elated. I never tire of empowering students with these energy tools that have truly transformed so many lives, including animals. I offer training from beginning to advanced levels in Energy Alchemy, Energy Healing and Reiki, Animal Communication, Intuitive and Spiritual Development and Meditation.

One of my signature offerings is the in person 2 day Bliss Retreat, where I reveal techniques that very often allow participants to taste the rarified state of spiritual ecstasy very quickly. I am also sharing a newly revised online course entitled “Enlightened Empaths: Transforming Your Super-Sensitivity to your Super-Power” so highly sensitive persons can more easily manage their energy and emotions and stop feeling so drained and impacted by other people’s moods.

These transformational techniques were all game changers for me, as I am an extreme empath, which often made it challenging for me to be around a lot of people without feeling exhausted. Now, this same heightened sensitivity allows me to sense and feel everyone, even over the phone, as I am working with them so I know what to focus on that will guide them to release the old patterns and unresolved emotions so they can shift into happy, healthy, wealthy and wise beings they are longing for.

One of my mentors shared that my purpose is to teach the teachers Mastery; so I have created a program that combines healing, manifesting and awakening techniques called Energy Alchemy Mastery that is now 6 months of training each with 3 levels so that students can immerse themselves in all the techniques that have brought me and hundreds of clients worldwide such great results.

And finally, my most recent passion project: I joined the board of a charity called Ten Million For World Peace, whose mission is to gather meditators for just 7 minutes a day to focus on world peace, especially world leaders, to uplift them to make choices for the highest good of all humanity. These peace “experiments” have been proven to help reduce violence by as much as 30% in the past so we are very encouraged that together we will have a significant impact. Plus, everyone who participates gets to enjoy feeling less stressed and more serene themselves, so it is a win-win.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

I have pivoted so many times in my life and career it’s hard to pick just one instance. In the early days after leaving law, I really wanted to be closer to my spiritual teacher in upstate New York, but I couldn’t move without having a j.o.b. So I applied for a position as the Director of a family preservation program working with at-risk youth and families with intensive short term therapy and interventions, even though I didn’t have a Masters in social work qualifications they required. But I had listed what I wanted in my next position, and I realized I wanted less research and writing briefs, and more direct connection with clients. So I applied and miraculously got an interview.

I was open about my qualifications (or lack thereof) and was floored when they told me I got the job! It turns out while at Legal Aid I had worked with someone on the Maryland State side so we were often adversaries, yet he provided me a glowing reference as he stated I was one of only two attorneys in the country who was working toward solutions, not just being adversarial. I had no idea that in the rest of the country he was considered a guru in the field, and that association had sealed the deal for the youth advocacy program! This made me feel so supported, like the universe had my back years in the making.

As I had no formal training as a social worker, I had to rely mostly on my intuition, which turned out to be an incredible asset. While there, I did grab as much cutting edge short term counseling training I could find, and after our first year, we had a 93% success rate of returning teens in out of state placements back home with support for families and teachers where needed. We saved the county over a $1 million in out of state high placement costs the first year, so they actually gave us more funding the next year and asked me to be Director of both family preservation and youth advocate programs. The agency had programs in 7 states, and had never received more funding than requested! Additionally, our program was so successful that several neighboring counties signed on.

While it was a definite pivot from the law, I learned to trust my intuition which has served me and my clients to this day.

Any fun sales or marketing stories?

Several years back I was in a high-end coaching program, and our small group had a coveted private dinner with our multi-million dollar business mentor. That year I had made some strides in expanding my courses and increasing my income, but I was working a lot more too and was exhausted and overwhelmed. One of my colleagues suggested I offer an exclusive year long program to only 3 clients for $25,000 each and get a break from worrying about making money for awhile. Our coach’s mouth dropped open in shock as I confided I had been getting the exact same message internally. She was justifiably worried that only those who teach people how to make more money can successfully charge that high a fee, and it was unheard of in the transformation industry.

It only took me just two weeks to put together an intensive year long program that included all my trainings and private retreats which interestingly came out to a value of $25,000. I made one offer and had two clients pay in full within the week! Soon after signing up with the immersive private program, one client found out she had suspicious growths in her lungs and so we had a lot of private healing sessions so we could focus on that issue right away. Gratefully, on subsequent scans, the tumors had disappeared!

As it turns out, right after offering that new program, I went into a deep meditative life-altering space that required a lot of quiet time to integrate, and the first time in my life I was able to accommodate my schedule and allow my next level of transformation to unfold completely, which was an enormous extra blessing. Significantly, what was unveiled to me during that transcendent phase has become a pivotal part of my teaching.
