We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Romaric Amoa. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Romaric below.
Romaric, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
My hero has always been my father. My father immigrated from the Ivory-Coast by way of Liberia to the United States in the early 90s. As the third child with ten other siblings, my father wanted to be the best person that he could be so he decided to embark on a journey to success.
After leaving a note under his mother’s pillow the morning of, my father made his way to the neighboring country of Liberia where he learned English while working there. He then saved enough money to immigrate to the US all on his own. He came to New York and resided in Jamaica Queens where he worked as a taxi driver. Thereafter, he helped his younger brother immigrate to the states as well.
Later on my father also brought his two children, my older brother and I, to the states at an early age. My brother joined him at the age of 7 from Liberia. Unfortunately, at the age of 12 I lost my mother so my father had decided to bring me to the US. This decision completely changed my life’s trajectory. I was able to see and live with my hero. My father was an entrepreneur and a businessman who always strived to make something of his own. And this is something that I respected a lot because he knew exactly where he came from and how much further he was willing to go to attain his goals.
In March 2019, my father died in a car accident while I was serving in Senegal as a Peace Corps volunteer. Since then I have vowed to continue his mission. I have pledged to never let anything hold me back from achieving my dreams because, like my father, I also know exactly where I come from and the sacrifices that have been for me to be here at this moment in time.
Romaric, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Commercial Real Estate advisor with the Outlier Group. We are a boutique Real Estate firm that celebrates entrepreneurship and encourages creativity. We believe in quality over quantity. Our brokerage is built on strategy and simplicity. Real estate for investors, it’s that simple.
I am mostly proud of working with people on a daily basis to assist them in coming up with solutions to their real estate needs and help them create an investment portfolio if necessary. I would like my potential clients and followers to know that I will always provide each single of them with the attention that they deserve because I am a problem-solver and there is nothing more satisfying to me than servicing others.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I believe the most effective way or strategy to grow my clientele is to immerse myself within my community at every possible level. I am new to the area and starting on a brand-new career path so this is easier said than done but I am forcing myself become comfortable being uncomfortable if that makes sense. I am forcing myself to attend at least 1-2 events weekly for now and I am sure that the frequency will surely increase over time as I make more connections.
I would have to admit that the hardest thing for me has been to adjust my thought process on a regular basis from always being results-oriented to being more practical and following an established and trusted process in addition to my continued efforts. I have to believe that this entire process will yield the results that I want to attain in the end.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I had to unlearn is plainly the idea that if you just keep your head down and do what you asked to do at any point in your corporate career, over time, your managers will see your worth and compensate you accordingly. I have had to realize that this is an illusion because everyone is out looking out for themselves, especially in corporate America where making profits take precedent over providing fair compensation to the labor force.
I knew that it would not be easy but I had to jump ship if I ever wanted to have the chance to achieve my dreams and make my life something that I was proud of. I decided to quit my corporate job, move across the country and start a new career where my full income comes from my earned commission. I understand that this may seem very drastic for most people but I have this innate faith and belief in myself and my Lord that this is exactly where I am supposed to be so I could not be more excited to continue on this journey to see where it takes me.
