We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lyndsey Schappe. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lyndsey below.
Hi Lyndsey, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I am 100% self taught. I started as a hobbyist in 2014 when I got my first camera. I lived in Washington state for 4 years, and at that time travel/blogging photography was really big on social media. Being in such a beautiful state I was always taking images of the hikes I went on and had friends and family model for me. My love for it grew after I found my grandfather’s vintage leica 35mm camera. After learning and mastering film photography, digital seemed so easy!

Lyndsey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Lyndsey, an Atlanta based wedding and film photographer. I started full time in 2017 when I quit my job working at a hospital. I shot my first wedding in 2018 and fell completely in love with documenting couples. My goal is to photograph my clients in their most true and authentic form, so that for many years to come they can enjoy their photos. What sets me apart from most photographers is my approach is very hands off. I enjoy capturing images of what is truly happening in the moment and not orchestrating or intervening in a disruptive way. I believe that a lot of photographers are influenced heavily by social media to get specific shots that are not necessarily true to the couple. Connecting to my clients on a personal level is deeply important to me. Having a relationship and building trust with your photographer creates the space for authentic moments to happen.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The best thing about my job is seeing my clients, and their friends + family’s reactions to the images. Seeing my work printed and hung up on the wall, being the last person to document an image of a lost loved one, and being there for so many firsts… births, milestones, the best days of your life.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Both of my parents are entrepreneurs. I watched them create many businesses as a child, and I learned so much from them. The biggest being that you do not have to go through the motions as an employee, you can create a life you love doing what you love.
