We were lucky to catch up with Khadija Nur recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Khadija, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I discovered creative makeup by accident. I was following a YouTube tutorial in my house and ended up not being able to blend my makeup the way the YouTuber instructed. After staring at it for too long, it looked like planets to me and that’s what I ended up creating. From then on, I decided that it was more fun experimenting than following a rigid tutorial. I have been interested in creative/editorial makeup since. I enjoy creating abstract and unsymmetrical looks.
Khadija, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Khadija. I am a black and Muslim content creator who mainly focuses content on Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest. I wear the hijab and like to coordinate my hijabs to my makeup looks.
I use water activated liners from Gavissi Beauty, matte fluid eye paints from About Face, as well as face paints from Mehron Makeup to do my more out there creative makeup looks.
I’m often inspired by anything – from video games, to animes, to nature. I rarely have a plan when I sit down and do my makeup looks. I love using Pinterest to sort out my look ideas and I also love asking my audience and my family what kind of looks they want to see whenever I’m stuck.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started gaining an audience when I did looks that matched my hijab. I did a series and had many people follow me from there. I noticed that my following really enjoyed when I incorporated my hijab to my looks, and I did to. I later had a few videos go viral when reels was introduced and am happy with where I am now.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
People can share the art they really enjoy. All it takes is a simple interaction for your favourite artists to feel supported. I feel so loved whenever I see people commenting on every post, or people saving my photos for later.
