We were lucky to catch up with Lysa Allman-Baldwin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lysa, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Authenticity & Purpose LLC came about as the result of my life bottoming out.
The short version is that at the beginning of 2015, I experienced a string of mishaps—to put it lightly—that happened one, after the next, after the next, after the next…boom, boom, boom – all within a 6-month period of time. And unfortunately, the stress, overwhelm, and depression as a result of those events catapulted so high that the only way I could see to get out of the extreme mental and emotional pain I was in was to take my life.
Fortunately, I saw enough of a ray of light not to do it because I had two teenagers at the time, and I knew what that would do to them if I left this earth that way.
Fast forward to 2 years later, after a lot of therapy and with support from my spiritual community, family, and friends, I had written a book about that dark time, embarked upon an 8-week book tour, and began a new career helping others not just survive, but thrive beyond their tragic experiences.
We all have a “What happened story” but it’s not the tale that is important. It’s one simple question: What are you going to do with it?
For me, the events brought up a flood of subconscious low self-worth beliefs through which I had been filtering all of my life experiences since childhood. But with help, I was able to pull those beliefs out from the shadows and start operating them, instead of them operating me. And I was able to find the blessings and lessons hidden within those experiences. It was all about a new way of living.
Not wanting anyone else to teeter on the edge of wanting to check out, I vowed that if my story could help even one person, everything I went through was worth it. Hence the name of my business – Authenticity & Purpose LLC.
Not checking out because of what it would do to other people is a very good reason. But it’s not enough. You need to choose to stay in this life experience for YOU – because you know that you’re worthy enough, and smart enough and beautiful enough; because you know your value and your worth; because you’re willing to weather the tough times and know that you will be even more brilliant on the other side of them; and you will be able to share your story and help other people. And if you follow a spiritual or religious path, it’s the knowing that something greater than yourself sent you here for a reason.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When I began Authenticity & Purpose LLC, it was as a speaker and workshop facilitator in primarily spiritual settings, which was in natural alignment with my personal belief that there is Divine Guidance coming from something greater than myself.
I’m fortunate and proud to say that everywhere I spoke and facilitated, it struck a chord with people from all walks of life. Regardless of age, income, education, racial or ethnic background, height, weight, etc., every one of us goes through dark times. It could be the loss of a loved one, a health challenge, getting divorced, fired from a job, problems with a family member, financial issues, and so on. But again, its not about the “What happened story,” rather “What are you going to do with it?
Along the way I kept getting requests to present in corporate environments, educational institutions, and other organizations, and that has transformed a great deal of my work into being a Keynote Speaker and Leadership Strategist. The principles are the same: How we can show up—mindfully and authentically—within settings that are often not supportive of individuality that goes beyond adhering to rules and guidelines.
And those rules and guidelines can be tangible, for example, as set through an HR department. Or intangible via our current society that says we have to conform to a certain weight, height, way we dress, amount of money we make, kind of car we drive, sexual orientation or gender identification…
These are some of the pain points of life we all have to deal with in some form or another. However, many of us need effective tools and strategies to be able to do so, while also creating more harmony and joy in our lives.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I would say it really comes down to networking and truly being yourself. People really resonate with authenticity and vulnerability. If you are able to demonstrate both of those things, whether in challenging or easygoing situations, people will naturally be drawn to you.
There’s a basic human need to be heard, understood, and loved. Connecting with others, especially people who may be outside of your customary social circles or areas of business expertise, is a benefit to both you and the other person. You share different stories, learn new things, and form bonds that often create business opportunities.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
