We recently connected with Rogers Healy and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rogers thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
A few years ago, I had the itch to do something that really allowed me to use my superpower, which is making connections. Throughout my career as a business owner, owning one of the largest independently owned real estate brokerages in the country, I learned what goes into having a successful business, who it takes, and how to get there. I knew I wanted to help other business owners find that success.
Shortly after, I was sitting at dinner with a few friends and it hit me. Why not start a venture capital firm that invests in GREAT founders, not JUST great businesses? In 2012, I made my first investment in the world of Venture Capital in Mizzen + Main. I fell in love with the idea of connecting the dots in the world of VC, and since then I had become one of Texas’ most active investors. After seeing the impact VC has on these businesses, I knew that was my next move.
And so the idea came into execution, and Morrison Seger quickly took off. Today, we have tens of millions of dollars raised and over 25 companies that we have the pleasure of working with, ranging from tequila to trading cards. Whether we are seeking out strategic investors, developing a creative marketing path, or connecting them with the right resources to get their product from point a to point b, Morrison Seger is along for the ride.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a seasoned entrepreneur, with over 20 years of investing experience and as a founder of multiple companies, ranging from real estate to the memorabilia space, I consider my secret weapon to be my eye for talent. Being a business owner, I’ve learned what it takes and what makes a company successful.
As an entrepreneur, investor, leader, and music guru, I strive to embody the spirit of a business owner. I jumped into business at an early age, and in 2005 started what is now Texas’ largest independently owned real estate company, Rogers Healy and Associates Real Estate. Since its inception, I went on to be the founder of Rogers Healy and Associates Land and Lake, Rogers Healy and Associates Commercial Real Estate, Healy Global Real Estate and Relocation, and Healy Property Management.
As fate would have it, I made my first investment in the world of Venture Capital in 2012, in Mizzen + Main. I fell in love with the idea of connecting the dots in the world of VC, and have since become one of Texas’ most active investors. After over a decade of investing in deals ranging from CPG to SaaS, I founded Morrison Seger Venture Capital Partners. “MoSe” quickly made a name for themselves, with early-stage investments in companies ranging from tequila to trading cards, and have been able to add a new layer of experience to venture capitalism.
Most importantly, I work every day to live a life of faith, alongside my wife Abby, our daughters Henley (named after Eagles’ frontman, Don Henley) and Collins (named after the great Phil Collins), our dogs, and all of our music memorabilia. I have one of the largest collections of music memorabilia in the world. During my free time, I enjoy relaxing with my family and friends at ‘Hotel California’, our 2,500sq ft back house turned music oasis.
As a veteran investor, I have the privilege of being a part of some of the most well-known brands in America.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Throughout the years of owning a business I’ve had to learn what I suck at. This allows me to hone in on what I am truly meant to do, and not be consumed with trying to perfect something I will NEVER perfect. I have had to unlearn a perfectionist mindset and step back and allow my amazing team to take ownership of some tasks that they have the ability to thrive in.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
With both real estate and Venture Capital, I have focused on adding personality to a traditionally boring industry. Making people see your personality and feel like they are actually a part of your journey is the key. Be bold, push the envelope, but most importantly, be your authentic self and people will stay to support you.
