Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to HoneyPlug. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, HoneyPlug thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Yes I am happy, I’d say I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in life doing what I love. It gives me a form of expression and an outlet while also giving me a social life.
And as for a job, I try not to think about it too much. If I did have a regular solid job I wouldn’t have been able to do 3/4 of the things I’ve done. My career choice is spontaneous and a regular job gets in the way of that.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a multi genre artist from St. Louis, USA. Specializing in Rap/HipHop and EDM/Dubstep. As a rapper my original tracks are more mellowed out and vibey while as a EDM DJ my tracks range from deep dub to heavier sub genres like riddim and TearOut while keeping to my hiphop roots. What pushed me into doing music was wanting to be heard and my story told. I remember the first time I really realized I wanted to go full in was when I went to my first underground rap concert running into artists like “K!NG QUE”, “Lil Smokemon”, & “J The Connect”. Who really inspired and motivated me to really push myself.
As for EDM I entered my first underground rave some months later and that’s where I met “Stymulation” , “Chesher”, & “Cøde.” who took me under their wing and mentored me. I wouldn’t be where I am without them honestly. Each one helped me separately and taught me many things. About the scene, music, the art of DJing, and production.
What sets me apart from most is I give a unique experience in my sets whether it’s genre blending, heavy drops, rapping over dubstep and being immersive with the crowd. There’s never a dull moment in a HoneyPlug set.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I can’t speak for society but I can speak for the STL scene as a whole.
As fans and supporters the best way to support your local talent and artists is to share their projects, like their posts, come to an event.
A lot don’t realize that as fans, consumers, supporters you hold the power in the local scenes, ways you can support your local artists are reaching out to production companies and tagging or requesting your local artists. Sadly a lot of companies tend to book or showcase within their friends circle not giving a fair chance to unheard artists that truly deserve those slots. As consumers you hold the power to counter that.
I’ve seen so much animosity between artists in this industry that really holds the STL scene. As a whole and as artists we need to come together instead of competing, gatekeeping, beefing with each other, it does nothing but hurt the STL music scene.
It’s easier said than done but I know it’s possible and I believe as the current generation of artists in this city we can make a way and pave a path for future artists to come together and succeed in what we fail to do.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The High. The feeling I get when I’m on stage and the music just takes over my soul and I’m in pure bliss. The feeling I get when I complete a project that I’m proud of. Knowing gave my supporters and the people that attended my sets something they couldn’t get anywhere else. These are the most rewarding aspects of being an artist to me.
