We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jac Lee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jac thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you manage your own social media?
I manage my own social media. As someone with a company that revolves around me as the face of the brand, it is essential that I am the one controlling and showing up on a daily basis. I have previously tried to outsource this and it lost the ‘soul’ of the business. I believe as someone with a personal brand, it is absolutely vital that you are in control of your own socials and people see and hear your voice on a daily basis!
I only recommend outsourcing when there is not a huge need for a sole figure behind the business, e.g. a restaurant / fashion brand can be included in these. I know owners of both of these categories who outsource their work and in this case it is the opposite – outsourcing is the vital part of the success of their social media!
It’s funny how so many people get it wrong, but it either goes one way or the other. I know how to help people in either situation, or how to find out which boat you’re in.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Jac, a photographer, videographer, podcaster, creator of piece society puzzles, content creator and part owner of Volando Tequila, and fitness addict.
I solve content issues for clients and help them use their personal brands as an asset to attract their ideal clients and keep those sponsors happy. I work differently to other creators as I spend a lot of time and emphasis on the planning stages – talking to clients about what their brand is, who they’re trying to attract, and creating concepts that fit their brand while also setting them apart. I do a lot of creative direction with my work and packages which really sets my work apart.
I do a lot of personal branding photo and video content across a lot of industries – from professionals like accountants and bookkeepers to VAs and PAs, to athletes and fitness industry professionals, to interior designers and cosmetic nurses. My strength is in branding, creating unique content for these professionals to share with their community and engage their clients through video and photographic content.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I was an ATP photographer (association of tennis professionals – mens pro tennis tour) until 2019. I was planning my first year on tour from the States to Europe and back to Australia when covid came in and all flights were cancelled. Not only did it stop me from photographing tennis overseas, but with tournaments cancelled and travel banned within Australia… there was nothing here to photograph either. I quickly pivoted to branding, hospitality and weddings, which I thrive in now.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
CONSISTENCY and thinking of your audience. Too many people share and create on a selfish level – what do I want to share. But they’re thinking completely wrong – you need to consider what your audience wants to receive. What do they find interesting and engaging? What are their pain points? What do they need help with?
Once you switch from an egotistical way of using social media to a method where you’re providing constant value, the game changes. Showing up, being authentically you, showing your personality, and creating a brand around the person you are will grow your following. It won’t be quick and it won’t be easy, but it’s the best way to create an authentic audience that will support you.
