We were lucky to catch up with Kimberly Lubin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I’ve struggle since my childhood with my own skin insecurities; my body odor and being allergic to nickel & grass. When I got older it only got worst. In my mid 20s I had enough and started researching natural alternatives. I knew there were others out there with similar issues like myself. The mission is to make you love yourself, have hope and believe things will get better by converting to natural.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My business is named after my father who passed in 2015 from a massive heart. He instilled hard work & dedication into all of us. These are the features I give to my business everyday.
I started my business in 2018 with my hair oil, I did the big chop and wanted to use ingredients that were safe, had purpose and I can pronounce. I am Haitian so a majority of my products I make have “ Lwil maskriti” which is Haitian Castor Oil. The following year I started my men’s skincare collection, then when I had children my baby collection and later my women’s collection. We have over twenty soap bars for all different skin types.
I’m proud of my brand because we have grown so much. I love going to markets, meeting customers and being able to fill that gap they’ve been missing, especially for the whole family. Being natural is at the center of it all.
I make all of my products by hand at home in small batches. During the day I am an Human Resources professional and outside of my work hours I am normally in the lab making items for my business. Everything is made with love.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn not to force my brand on others. Someone people are not ready to convert to natural and may not love the smell of essential oils. Everyone is not your customer. Your family and friends may not want to purchase from you and if they do, they won’t tag you or leave a review but most likely will if you were a celebrity. Those that understand will love everything about your brand and become lasting customers.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I have faith and is doing the footwork to have my business in retail stores. When I started my brand we were using micas for colors, which were fine at first but I started looking at the bigger picture. I stopped using micas which are pigment colors and found natural clays and powders to help accomplish the color I was looking for and if I do use micas they are skin safe and free of harming chemicals. We stop using plastic and have converted to paper boxes and glass. For the plastic I use they are BPA free and recyclable. I want to leave my footprint behind and care about the environment by being more substantial able.
