We recently connected with Julielle and have shared our conversation below.
Julielle, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I have always enjoyed performing in local theater productions, but while studying music in a study abroad program, I had the opportunity to sing a few tunes at an Irish pub in Nova Scotia. I knew right then that I wanted to have a career surrounding performance and the opportunities started to unfold after that! I was set on finding a band back at the University of California Santa Barbara and auditioned for a band called The Framers. Played with them and a couple other groups for a few years before moving to Nashville.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always had a love for music and a passion for creating a musical environment where people can make long lasting memories. By combining funky Motown bass lines and drum beats with traditional country instruments, I aim to create a unique moment for a robust range of genres, including Country, Pop, Soul, Motown, and 60s and 70s Rock. By performing a soulful, groovy sound with infectious melodies and lyrics that outline a plethora of my experiences with music and memories, I convey a raw, refreshing style in the modern country music scene.
So far, I’ve enjoyed jamming at epochal venues such as Los Angeles’ The Mint, a sold out show at Nashville’s Listening Room, and countless appearances at writers rounds at iconic and independent venues, such as East Nashville’s The 5 Spot and Bobby’s Idle Hour.
Much like the space for women in modern country music, Julielle’s sound is constantly evolving and pushing boundaries and providing listeners with the confidence boost through some upbeat and often inspirational funky country music.
When I am not playing music, I bartend in Nashville, so I’ve recently explored pairing my new releases with cocktail recipes that best represent the vibe of the song. For example, my debut single “Whiskey Wings” featured a fruity and sweet twist on a Whiskey Sour, incorporating Angels Envy Bourbon. Check out my instagram page for videos and upcoming show dates!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Recently, I’ve been drawn to autobiographical memoirs by artists across varying decades and genres. The three that stand out to me the most are “Waging Heavy Peace” by Neil Young, “My Life” by Keith Richards, and most importantly, Margo Price’s “Maybe We’ll Make It.” All three works detail the trials, tribulations, great successes, and small victories of these artists that all started where I am now. As I continue to embark on this creative journey, these books have kept me inspired and reminded me that everyone’s journey is different, that keeping an open mind about every situation is imperative, and that enjoying every moment is the key to life in general. Their specific experiences of how they met the people who contributed to great pivots in their career and decisions that inhibited them from furthering their career provide insight on how I might think about conducting myself as a young creative in the social media climate. The world is constantly shifting and I know that my experiences will be vastly different from even other creatives similar to my age, but reading these books has kept me inspired to be genuine, take risks, always strive to be a better version of myself, and appreciate every moment.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is being able to really connect with your audience in a live setting. My greatest joy comes from knowing that I created an environment where people felt entertained and inspired. Whether it is in playing my rendition of someone else’s song or one I wrote in the comfort of my own home, getting to share these songs and the connection with the audience is the most exhilarating experiences. The same joy comes from writing the songs themselves as well. It is the most satisfying thing to be in such vulnerable state and create something concrete and shareable out of a mere idea. Artistic collaboration with those around you is a plus as well. Sharing the art is the best part.
