We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Melinda St Fort. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Melinda below.
Melinda, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
“You’re are only as good as your last performance” When I heard this quote long ago it entirely made sense. You’re only as good as your “last” meaning the last thing you did, the last photo you’ve taken, the last book you’ve written that is the highest potential at that moment. I say that because my most recent project will always be my most meaningful. My single “More” came from being completely exhausted with so much in my life. I was tired of seeing Haitian people being whipped at the Mexican border, tired of having to have my life figured out when I really wanted to help those people yet I couldn’t fully help myself. I was in the process of moving and I just wrote and told myself even when you get tired give them more, give everything you aren’t done yet. This is why in the phone booth I’m typing in Haiti’s area code trying to fight on their behalf.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
This isn’t my first time speaking with Voyage, and I’m happy I’m interesting enough to be invited for another interview. My heart is happy to have the ability to pursue my purpose. I’m a recording artist and my songs have been played in places my feet have yet to touch such as Bahrain, Manama, Kampala, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Uganda, and parts of the United States just to name a few. It just shows those long hours putting together a piece of music really resonated with the people it’s meant for.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Currently teaching myself that you don’t have to have the best of everything in order to have a fan base. You don’t have to have the best lyrics, beats, studio-quality, or even visuals for people to want to support you. I’m taken back by the number of complete strangers that will send me a direct message saying they love my energy and they just start supporting my work. This happens in person often it’s super easy for me to go on an adventure with myself and I end up making friends along the way and those people always support and keep in contact. These are the moments when I feel I’m being reassured that everything I could possibly need will come to me. A firm believer in the quote ” coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous” get out in the world test it for yourself and see what comes.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’m not a social media guru but I seem to create things that draw folks in. I think what’s helped is my courage and view of life. I’m often asked “how did you do this” and “what made you think of that” I journal often talk to myself on paper asking what is it that I want and how can I make “happiness” my objective. When I realized I love traveling and being free to create I started taking international solo trips and hiring camera people to record me just being me. People are really astonished at what I’ve done, just last year I went to Colombia for the first time by myself and I don’t speak the language and somehow I met complete strangers to celebrate with. Once I have seen the feedback and the questions flood in I realized people want that objective as well just to be happy and they need to know what actions I took to get there. Ever since I realize people not only want to hear me sing but they want to know me and how I’m able to move without any apparent fear. Luckily for them I’m creating a few eBooks to help liberate others.
