We were lucky to catch up with Akidah Njuzu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Akidah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Life can be stressful as we age, for many women responsibilities begin tout weight self-care. I created Suite Ta Bu to encourage mature Black women over 35 to play, with accessories, reconnect with their own personality and express it through a style they owned while making bold and beautiful entrances. My hope was for them to return to personal style and step away from trends, while reconnecting with what is divinely feminine.
What can often be lost in a world that, for many, is full of disappointments, microaggressions, limited life experiences, the realities of “adulting” and limited support -is the joy within one’s own experience. Suite Ta Bu isn’t a jewelry brand- it’s an invitation to our tribe to live well and experience more life- beautifully. After conducting tabling events in the DMV and selling out of curated and designed collections, I noticed that over jewelry selection, women would tell me their stories- pieces chosen were usually a celebration of something- a birthday, a divorce, a weight loss, a degree. This encouraged me to serve women differently- to be intentional about reminding them that they are the special occasion and the magic of the moment.
Akidah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Raised in Zimbabwe and Kenya, I was affected by many cultures before moving to the US to meet my family. Luxury in America for many has become a Love Story with materialism while in other places it’s an expression of style and ritual for the senses. I created Suite Ta Bu- for us, grown women who were queens before the attention, the strong friends, the femme fatales, the hard workers, the women in wonderful transition and the self-made. It’s our permission slip to buy the block & look good while doing it. We all deserve to be witnessed taking up space. It’s what I call a witness of – soul sparkle.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started my company, I sold candles and t-shirts. While they did well, I learned that products have seasons and trends, and as a business owner, it’s important that your products excite you. It’s okay to pivot strategically, and in terms of your inventory, when you build true community, they will be open to a new adventure. My tribe talks to me and I pivot when they tell me they want something new.
