We recently connected with Brenna Peterson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brenna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Finding my footing in the tattoo industry and earning a full-time living from my passion was a journey filled with growth, challenges, and invaluable lessons. Starting as an apprentice at Dark Age Tattoo, I was immersed in an environment where learning and perfecting my craft was my primary focus, even though it meant financial uncertainty at first. As I developed my unique style and began to connect with clients who sought out my work, I realized the power of building relationships and creating art that resonated deeply with others. Embracing social media not only expanded my reach but also allowed me to share my journey and connect with a wider audience. Yet, every step of this path, from the meticulous guidance of my mentors to the joy of seeing my clients visions come to life on their skin, has been enriched with warmth and a sense of shared humanity. It’s been a beautiful process of transforming my passion into a sustainable career, underscored by the realization that warmth, authenticity, and persistence are key to thriving in the creative world.

Brenna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a tattoo artist at Dark Age Tattoo in Denton, TX. My foray into the world of tattooing began at 20, inspired by the opportunity to blend my passion for art with a tangible craft. The pivotal decision to dive into this field was made when I met Rember and Frank, the founders of Dark Age Tattoo, whose mentorship not only honed my skills but also solidified my love for this unique form of expression. The apprenticeship was challenging, filled with trials and a steep learning curve, but it was under their guidance that I learned the true artistry of tattooing, transforming obstacles into stepping stones toward mastering my craft.
After two years of learning and growing under the tutelage of Rember and Frank, I ventured out to explore and refine my style, traveling across states and absorbing various artistic influences. This journey of discovery eventually led me back to Dark Age Tattoo, where I was embraced not just as a former apprentice, but as a seasoned artist. Here, I’ve found my niche in color, painter realism, bringing to life everything from delicate flowers to mythical dragons. This evolution of my style is a testament to my journey, underpinned by a deep-seated gratitude for my mentors and the paths I chose. My story, rooted in continuous growth and exploration, reflects a commitment to pushing the boundaries of tattoo art and a relentless pursuit of personal and artistic fulfillment.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I see how valuable networking and social media could have been from the start. Networking is key to connecting with others in the field, learning from their experiences, and finding new opportunities. Social media, on the other hand, is great for showing your work to a wider audience and telling the story behind each piece. If I had tapped into these resources earlier, my journey might have progressed faster, bringing more opportunities and connections my way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most fulfilling part of being an artist lies in the profound connection between my work and its impact on others. There’s something incredibly rewarding about looking at a piece I’ve poured my heart into, seeing it come to life on someone’s skin, and then hearing the feedback from my clients. When they share stories of how “Everyone stops me to ask about my tattoo and I get complimented all the time,” it’s more than just a pat on the back for a job well done. It’s a testament to the ripple effect of my art—how it not only beautifies but also sparks conversations and brings joy to those who wear it and those who see it. Knowing that my creations have been received so positively and are worn with pride and confidence fills me with an indescribable joy every single time.
