Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Terrance Lee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Terrance thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I created The Introvert Leader brand in November of 2020. Prior to that, my career started in the Aerospace and Defense industry, and I found myself at a crossroads. I felt that my naturally introverted personality was keeping me from excelling in my career. However, in 2015 I was given a significant leadership opportunity on a $200M aircraft program. In that role I was able to help lead our team to successful delivery of several products to our customer, but most importantly, in that role I was able to learn to use my introverted nature as a strength. I created The Introvert Leader with a mission to help fellow introverts to do the same. In October 2021 I released my first book, Quiet Voice Fearless Leader, which has sold over 13,000 copies to date. The second book in The Introvert Leader series, The Calm Effect, will come out next year.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I help introverted professionals to reach their full potential by learning to leverage their unique strengths. Many introverts feel that their extroverted counterparts get ahead at work and in business due to their personality. I show introverts that the key to growth is actually to embrace your authentic self. In addition to books, we are currently working on an online community for introverts as well.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In February 2023 I started a podcast called ‘Quiet Voice Fearless Mind’. The show was doing well, but I had to make a shift around September. I found that recording and editing my show every week was making it difficult to find time for me to work on writing my next book. I love helping people through my writing, so I had to make a difficult decision. I decided to pause recording of the podcast in order to focus on my writing. It was a significant pivot, but I believe it was the right decision.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson that I had to unlearn was my belief that I had to be more extroverted to be successful. Throughout my life I saw people that were more outgoing than me getting ahead, receiving promotions at work and winning in business. So I assumed that I had to become like them. When I learned to use my strengths as an introvert to my advantage, that was when everything changed.
