We were lucky to catch up with Josh Munnell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, thanks for joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I’ve been able to sustain a life working entirely within the music world for the last several years. There are always ups and downs with frequency of work so I have to be able to weather that through budgeting/saving etc. It was a steady build of work and connections after college that got me to where I am today! For me and many others, it’s all about piecing together a career with a number of different jobs whether that’s gigs, teaching, recording, producing.
Saying yes to opportunities even if you don’t feel like they are worth your time and effort. Sometimes they may not be and are simply a paycheck. Other times, those seemingly inconsequential jobs get you on someone’s radar and can propel your career.
Josh, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a professional singer, arranger and vocal producer living in Los Angeles. I studied Commercial Music at Azusa Pacific University and have been working in the industry for nearly 10 years. I do a variety of things including live work as a solo and group singer, recording in the studio and vocal production for projects and TV/Film including The Masked Singer, The Witcher, Hocus Pocus 2 among others.
I am proud of those projects listed above as well as a recent tour in China singing Disney songs for thousands of people!
I have a strong work ethic and desire to provide a high quality product whatever the medium be that in production or as a singer myself.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Watch, share and like their content! That’s what keeps creatives creative! If you stream music, look into which platforms best support artists. Some are far better than others! Buy content whenever possible and donate/support their work on Patreon/etc.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to come into a space with other artists and create something is a special feeling that’s hard to match and describe. Then seeing how that creation can inspire and move others is a gift.
