Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mikayla Prioleau. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mikayla, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Don’t be afraid to take a risk. I took a risk when I first graduated college and applied for a job that I was not fully qualified for, but I knew that I could do the work and do it well. I trusted myself when I submitted the application but also was in shock that I did it. Once I went through the interview process, I was able to see that I was a good fit the entire time. I accepted the job and was able to thrive in it. Sometimes we get so caught up with the “what ifs” , the “whys” and the “hows”, we miss out on what God really has for us.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Southern girl that loves to create memorable experiences for people through food. I was born and raised in Columbia, SC and really enjoyed being in the kitchen as a young child. I started my blog because I wanted to show people how I could put myself into food, but also wanted to share memorable moments of food across the country. I got into food blogging by taking a risk. I took a risk to start a page and start capturing pictures and videos of as much food as I could to build up a good starting content base. From the first home cooked meal I have ever posted, eatswithkayyyyy has grown into something way larger than I ever expected. It is my brand and who I am.
I am most proud of stepping out on faith and following my dreams. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into but I knew it made me happy! Everyone needs to find something that genuinely makes them happy. It was at the time that I started meeting so many great people and expanding my network through food that I realized, taking a risk wasn’t so bad.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the fact that I am happy. I value peace and peace comes with doing the things that make you smile. It is also very rewarding to notice growth and change from where I began. It is a great feeling to have knowing that I am continuing to make progress as I learn and grow each day. Each day will be different and some days will be more successful than others.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time where I had to pivot in life was when my position was eliminated in 2020 due to COVID. I was working as a marketing professional and I was a boss. Straight out of college I was able to manage my own team, open entertainment venues across the country, coordinate volunteer work, and be able to be a part of so many community and national events. When our positions were eliminated I thought my entire career was over. I was so depressed because it started off really well for the first couple of years post college. I took a risk and landed my dream first job. Once that was taken away from me I dealt with so many emotions and feelings and was able to pivot into the nonprofit world, then to higher education and now I am back into the field of my true passion, marketing.
