We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joy Hearten-Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
In order to practice massage therapy within my moral and ethical code, I took the risk of loss of income; by quitting my spa job and working for myself full-time. Although the last year has slowly yet steadily increased in business, the temporary loss of income has been worth every minute of growth and change that I have experienced along the way. I am operating on a full schedule, helping people five days a week. In addition, I am now able to work on individuals with disabilities through medicaid.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I made the choice to become a massage therapist during my Sophmore year of college. I had changed my major twice at that point and was feeling uncertain as to what I wanted my undergraduate degree to be in. I did know one thing though; I wanted to be a massage therapist. My experience with massage therapy up to this point in my life had been nothing short of incredibly positive, so I decided to attend trade school for massage therapy while finishing up my general education requirements for my undergraduate degree. Since graduating from Massage Therapy school in 2009, I have been in practice! Insight Movement offers massage therapy in-office, with a focus on female athletes and in-home for individuals with disabilities. What sets me apart from other MT’s in Colorado Springs is my extensive knowledge of how sports affect athletes and my ability to efficiently correct pain patterns in the body. I am most proud of having the ability to work with individuals with disabilities throughout Colorado Springs. There is such an extensive need and I am so happy to be able to provide this service to a community that often gets overlooked.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been sponsoring the dance team that I am a part of.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Other than training/knowledge, I think knowing you ‘why’ for being in practice is the most helpful for succeeding as a massage therapist.
