We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful MARK GREENE. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with MARK below.
MARK, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I had left a company that I had helped build from the beginning, after I had spent 20+ years at, and was the President of, My wife was ill and bedridden, her mother had been diagnosed with cancer, and my father, at 80 years old had broken his neck. We had a son in an expensive, private, out-of-state college and for the first time in my life I was unemployed, 55 years old, and didn’t know what was next. I needed to find something to do to provide income, that I could do from home while I was caring for my wife. My son suggested starting a podcast and the rest is history. That was 10 years ago. Today I have interviewed over 2,450 guests on Cars Yeah.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My first career was in the advertising and graphic design business. Something I did for 11 years. Then I was part of a start up direct mail catalog business that was in the automotive sector. I’ve been an automotive enthusiast for my entire life so that was a great fit. I was in charge of the marketing and merchandising and my role evolved into every aspect of that business and I ended up as President, running the company. When I sold back my shares to care for my wife I started the Cars Yeah podcast. I didn’t even know what a podcast was. The goal was to work at home and share stories of successful people in the automotive sector. People who had discovered a way to create a life, career and business around their passion for cars.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Starting a podcast, when you have no idea about anything in that world was daunting. I had to learn everything from creating the brand, logo, a website, learning how to record and edit shows, social media (this was over 10 years ago) and then find guests. I chose to create a show where I interviewed 5 people weekly. No other automotive podcast did that many shows.
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
I am in the process of selling my podcast now.
