We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Orin Torati. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Orin below.
Orin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My initial exposure to creative direction was cultivated during my education as an architect, wherein I honed diverse strategies and methodologies for design. This evolution continued throughout my academic journey, encompassing both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, guiding me beyond conventional architectural frameworks and prompting the exploration of alternative creative avenues. This exploration led to experimentation with a range of innovative mediums, enabling me to construct immersive worlds that I designed both visually and spatially, incorporating multiple layers of complexity within singular projects.
During this period, I encountered a pivotal challenge in the form of professional constraints, confining my creative expression to the realm of traditional architecture. Eager for a more expansive and unrestricted professional landscape, one less hindered by conventional rules and regulations, I sought an educational experience with the capacity to transform the direction my career was going in.
To overcome these limitations, I pursued postgraduate studies at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, where I enrolled in the ‘Fiction & Entertainment’ program. This specialized curriculum offered a targeted focus on the entertainment industry, allowing me to deepen my understanding of its workings. The program not only imparted invaluable insights into the industry but also facilitated meaningful connections with seasoned professionals. Additionally, it equipped me with essential skillsets relevant to the entertainment sector, many of which were familiar due to my architectural background.
This immersive educational experience at SCI-Arc became instrumental in propelling me towards a more diversified and fulfilling career path within the realm of creative direction and learning the craft.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My professional trajectory has been characterized by an amalgamation of diverse fields, resulting in a multifaceted identity that encompasses a spectrum of disciplines. My professional identity is defined as that of a speculative worldbuilder, specializing in the spatial and visual design of intricate worlds.
Drawing upon my foundational education as an architect, I acquired a profound understanding of design principles and methodologies crucial for both spatial and visual design. But, recognizing the constraints inherent to the architectural professional world and desiring a greater amount of creative freedom, I strategically navigated toward the dynamic landscape of the entertainment industry, to which I shifted through a postgraduate degree at SCI-Arc’s Fiction & Entertainment program.
Within the realm of the entertainment industry, I offer a spectrum of creative services to a diverse clientele, spanning the conceptualization and design of entire worlds for film, television series, brands, fashion editorials, and live entertainment events such as concert tours and music videos. My expertise lies in the art of worldbuilding, a discipline in which I have received specialized training and extensive practical experience.
Through a curated selection of service packages, I provide clients with bespoke solutions tailored to their specific needs, leveraging my proficiency in spatial and visual design to bring imaginative and immersive worlds to life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
What always lent itself to be a source of profound gratification in my creative pursuits across diverse domains has been witnessing the realization of a project and its iterative refinement process. I firmly believe that an iterative approach not only facilitates the evolution of the project but also sparks new inspirations and exploration of potential avenues.
However, the creative journey is not without its challenges. Confronting creative blockages or reaching apparent impasses is an inherent part of the process. During such junctures, I have found the greatest reward in seeking input from my peers. Sharing my work with colleagues allows for the infusion of fresh perspectives and diverse opinions, often serving as a catalyst for overcoming creative hurdles and charting new directions for the project.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
A central goal guiding my creative endeavors is the aspiration to collaboratively engage with artists and fellow creatives that I admire. The prospect of potential collaborations and collective explorations evoke excitement, representing invaluable opportunities for mutual learning among artists.
These collaborations extend across a diverse spectrum of fields, encompassing partnerships with artists, creatives, and experts spanning various disciplines. For example, collaborations within scientific fields contribute uniquely to the founding layers of the worldbuilding projects, as they play a foundational role in shaping the conceptual frameworks of the creative endeavors I undertake.
