We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jason Knill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jason , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always had woodworking as a passionate hobby, restoring furniture with my wife, using a hand router, and creating custom gifts such as weddings and home decor for our family and friends. Soon, I found myself researching techniques to enhance my skills. That turned into researching routers to be able to carve custom designs. That’s when I decided to take this love for woodworking and turn it into a business, so I could help others design and customize signs for their home, offices, special occasions, and businesses.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a first-generation woodworker who started by crafting custom gifts for my family and friends. My creations included wooden signs for weddings, driveways, and homes, as well as Christmas decorations. However, I decided to transform my passion into a business that could help others design and personalize signs for their homes, offices, and special events. I aim to provide a unique piece that stands out from anything you’d find in a typical store.
There is something beautiful about taking a piece of raw wood, designing it, and enhancing the natural wood grain. It’s a fascinating process to witness from start to finish. My inspiration comes from the old-world charm of handcrafted items, which I see in the wooden signs hanging in old towns or Mackinac Island. With every project, I strive to pay attention to the vibrant details that highlight the wood grain and natural texture variations. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the joy on a client’s face when I bring their vision to life. It’s incredibly satisfying to see my handmade work hanging in driveways or businesses.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The biggest source of new clients is word of mouth and my very own, very large sign out front of my home. This has been a piece that stands out and showcases my work.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I keep in touch via email and social media. I do keep an organized contact list through an online CRM. This helps me store a client’s file and information about their special project. Providing exceptional customer service is one of my highest priorities.
