We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jacob Kelley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jacob below.
Hi Jacob, thanks for joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
It all began with a simple but powerful realization: my community needed something more. People were asking for guidance, education, and a safe space to explore and understand the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion. They wanted to learn about queer identities, sexuality, and the vibrant culture of drag. And so, fueled by a passion to bridge this gap, I embarked on a journey that would lead to the birth of Mx, Kelley Queer Education.
In March 2020, I took the first step and officially established Mx, Kelley Queer Education as I soon went on to finish my master’s in Human Sexuality and began my doctorate in Human Sexuality Philosophy. It was a modest beginning, but the response was immediate and encouraging. My inbox is filled with requests to speak, train, and engage with universities. Evidently, there was a real hunger for the services I envisioned providing.
But starting a business is more than just having an idea; it’s about taking action. So, I set out to lay the groundwork for a multifaceted endeavor. The next days and months were a whirlwind of activity. I dove headfirst into research, learning everything I could about business consulting, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), queer-inclusive sex education, and the world of drag entertainment.
As someone from a small rural town, I understood the barriers that often exist within communities when it comes to engaging with topics like LGBTQIA+ issues. But I also knew that those barriers could be broken down with the right approach. And so, I turned to drag as a powerful tool for communication and engagement. It wasn’t just about entertainment; it was about using drag as a platform to amplify voices, spark conversations, and foster understanding.
Through this process, I gained knowledge and expertise and a deeper understanding of my identity. I recognized the importance of acknowledging and learning from my own mistakes, and I was determined to use what I had learned to make a positive impact.
In 2022, Mx, Kelley Queer Education officially became an LLC, marking a significant milestone in the journey. But the work was far from over. Building a business is an ongoing process, filled with challenges and triumphs alike.
Today, Mx, Kelley Queer Education operates on a model of three interconnected services: business and DEI consulting, queer-inclusive sex education, and drag entertainment and engagement. Each service plays a vital role in our mission to educate, empower, and advocate for acceptance within communities.
As I continue to speak, educate, and engage with audiences, I am reminded of the importance of breaking down walls of tolerance and embracing true acceptance. Mx, Kelley Queer Education isn’t just a business; it’s a movement—a commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable world for all. And I am honored to be a part of it.

Jacob, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Absolutely! My journey into my industry and the establishment of Mx, Kelley Queer Education has been driven by a deep passion for fostering inclusivity, understanding, and empowerment within communities.
My background in psychology, coupled with my academic pursuits in human sexuality education, laid the groundwork for my exploration into the intricate intersections of identity, diversity, and equity. Through personal experiences and encounters within my rural community, I identified a pressing need for accessible and engaging education on LGBTQIA+ issues, as well as a desire for meaningful dialogue around topics like sexuality and gender.
This realization served as the catalyst for the creation of Mx, Kelley Queer Education, a platform dedicated to providing comprehensive services in three key areas:
Business and DEI Consulting: We offer tailored consulting services to businesses and organizations seeking to foster inclusive environments and integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles into their practices. From strategic planning to training workshops, we work closely with clients to develop customized solutions that address their unique needs and challenges.
Queer-Inclusive Sex Education: Our educational programs and workshops aim to fill the gap in comprehensive sex education by providing inclusive and affirming resources for individuals of all identities. Through interactive sessions and open dialogue, we empower participants to explore topics such as sexual health, consent, and relationships in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.
Drag Entertainment and Engagement: Drag isn’t just entertainment—it’s a powerful form of expression and activism. Through our drag performances, events, and engagement initiatives, we strive to amplify queer voices, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the diversity of LGBTQIA+ culture. From dazzling performances to thought-provoking discussions, we use drag as a vehicle for education, advocacy, and community-building.
At the heart of Mx, Kelley Queer Education is a commitment to fostering understanding, acceptance, and celebration of all identities. We aim to create spaces where individuals feel seen, heard, and valued, regardless of their gender, sexuality, or background. What sets us apart is our holistic approach, combining education, entertainment, and advocacy to drive meaningful change within communities.
I am incredibly proud of the impact we’ve been able to make thus far, from sparking important conversations to empowering individuals to embrace their authentic selves. Moving forward, my goal is to continue expanding our reach, engaging with diverse audiences, and challenging societal norms to create a more inclusive and equitable world for all. Whether you’re a business looking to enhance your DEI initiatives, an educator seeking comprehensive sex education resources, or a community member eager to engage with queer culture, Mx, Kelley Queer Education welcomes you with open arms and a commitment to authenticity, empathy, and growth.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The pivot from a stable job to full-time entrepreneurship was a defining moment in my journey with Mx, Kelley Queer Education—a decision born out of necessity but fueled by determination and resilience.
It all began with a setback: being laid off from my primary job. In that moment of uncertainty, I faced a crossroads. I could either succumb to fear and doubt, or I could seize the opportunity to pursue my passion wholeheartedly. I chose the latter.
Embracing the uncertainty, I made the bold decision to invest all my energy and resources into my burgeoning business. What started as a side venture—a passion project aimed at learning and growth—suddenly became my lifeline. The pivot from a stable income to the unpredictability of entrepreneurship was daunting, but I was driven by a deep sense of purpose and a belief in the potential of Mx, Kelley Queer Education.
As I navigated this new chapter, I confronted a myriad of challenges and doubts. Would this venture succeed? Could I make a living doing what I loved? The weight of responsibility rested squarely on my shoulders, and the realization that success or failure hinged on my own efforts was both empowering and intimidating.
In the face of uncertainty, I learned to embrace control over my own destiny. I cultivated a mindset rooted in resilience, adaptability, and self-belief. Instead of allowing fear to paralyze me, I channeled it into fuel for growth and innovation. Every setback became an opportunity for learning, every obstacle a chance to prove my resilience.
But perhaps the greatest lesson I learned through this pivot was the importance of living without regret. The fear of failure paled in comparison to the regret of not pursuing my dreams and living a life aligned with my truest self. It was a lesson in courage, in daring to defy convention and forge my own path.
Today, as I reflect on the journey that brought me to where I am, I am filled with gratitude for the challenges that shaped me and the resilience that carried me through. The pivot from uncertainty to purpose has not only transformed my business but also my outlook on life. And while the road ahead may still be fraught with challenges, I face it with a newfound sense of confidence, knowing that I am the master of my own destiny.
