We recently connected with Abel “Aybul” Wagner and have shared our conversation below.
Abel “Aybul”, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
Besides money I’ve made from streaming through Distrokid and BMI, the first check I ever earned as a creative was for a performance on April, 20th 2021. I was asked to open for a friend of mine (she was headlining) and I performed a 15 minute set and made over $60. I laugh about it now cause it was only $60 but that was the first time I was ever compensated for a performance. It was an awesome experience and really inspiring.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Aybul I am a songwriter, producer, and artist based in the Atlanta, GA area but raised in the midwest in a small town called Salem, Wisconsin
I was always creative as a kid wanting to draw, paint, etc., but I never thought about making music until I was a teenager. Around the age of 13 or 14 I began writing raps in my notebooks during high school with a couple friends but never took it very seriously or thought anything of it. It was really a hobby that we would do instead of doing actual school work. Once I graduated high school I went to MATC in Milwaukee, WI to pursue a degree in audio production/engineering. I graduated in the summer of 2018 and moved down to Atlanta with only $500 to my name.
Since then I have worked with artists like Gunna, Young Thug, Lil Yatchy, Kevin Gates, Mariah the Scientist, T.I., and many more.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I understood social media more and how to optimize the marketing ability before I began making music. It’s a very resourceful tool for business in today’s society that allows for easy growth without paying for ads or marketing strategies from bigger companies. Recently, I have figured out how to promote myself as an artist and songwriter but understanding this resource earlier in my career would’ve been beneficial.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I really built most of my audience being consistent. Posting a video or reel a couple times a week. One aspect that gets overlooked is the engagement with followers and people who are commenting or messaging you. When you stay consistent with engagement on your posts and profile it will allow your content to be seen more frequently by the people you interact with.
My advice to anyone starting a business on social media is to stop overthinking. Stop thinking negatively about what people might think about your content and just post. If you don’t promote your business and post content no one will do it for you! You have to be your biggest advocate!
