We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bobby McMorris. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bobby below.
Bobby, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
In year 2001′ I went to my first play, “God Don’t Like Ugly” by Carlton Hamilton, while visiting friends in LA. I still remember the feeling because that is when the theatre bug hit me. I was like a kid in a candy store as I couldn’t sit still in my seat, going back and forth to purchase as much memorabilia as possible. I lived in the moment and didn’t want to ever lose that feeling. I recall on that day saying to myself, “I can do this, I will do this” and I’ve been writing every since!
I’ve tried many things prior to expericing theatre such as serving in the military, working as a barber, graduating from college with a B.B.A., and several jobs in financial services but I’ve discovered that writing is my true passion!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In 2001, I returned back home after attending my first stage play in LA. I expressed to my English Instructor, Mr. Cluster Byars, who was also a writer that I had an interest in writing plays. He taught me the elements of drama and gave me an anthology of plays. I then proceeded to take acting classes, work shops, attended theatrical shows that came in town, and read many books from several libraries. I wrote my first play, “God Can Change You”, one year later and held it at Victory Gospel, the church I was attending at that time. It was a great feeling in seeing my vision come into fruition.
Since my first production, I’ve put countless hours into writing and ensuring our shows are entertaining but the most important take-away is a powerful message.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s taking an abstract thought and giving it life, lived out through characters in a story. It becomes most rewarding when audiences can related to the overall message and gives positive feedback about my work. It’s an indescribable feeling of how appreciated I feel when they love our performance and can’t wait till the next production. I sit back and reflect post production, being amazed it was first a thought, then sparked by creativy.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to tour our productions nationally on the highest levest. I believe we all have a story to tell and I’ve never been afraid to take the neccessary risk to tell mines. I’ve learned to enjoy the process and celebrate every milestone and d0n’t dispise small beginings because has to start from somewhere. I’m looking forward to the day when we will perform our production in the same theatre where it all began for me, i believe that day is coming soon!
