Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Karwat. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jessica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
One defining moment of my life was when I realized that I was extremely unhappy at my job at the time. I just finished my studies in business management and marketing and right after I got my first job as a marketing assistant. I was so excited that this was going to be my dream career. No not even a few months in, I realized that this was not it. I remember one significant moment where my boss connected me with a mentor to help me advance in my career. I remember talking to her on the phone and her being so enthusiastic about sales and marketing and telling me all about the things that I could achieve in this career. But I just sat there and felt nothing. I decided to wait and stay for a couple of more months until eventually I realized nothing was really changing. I was extremely unhappy and I thought something was wrong with me. I felt that my body was telling me it was time to leave. That’s when I decided to leave, even though I had no idea on what to do next. And that’s what I did. I moved back with my mom, moved countries went back to waitressing for a couple of months to clear my mind, and to create space for myself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been really into staying healthy. I wanted to know all about food, exercise, and feeling my best. But after getting the hang of fitness and nutrition, I faced unexpected health issues when I stopped using birth control. I had bad hormonal acne, digestive problems, an eating disorder, irregular cycles, and struggled with gaining weight. It felt weird because people often asked me for health advice, but I was dealing with my own healing journey.
For three years, I tried everything – doctors, medicines – but nothing worked. Feeling a bit lost, I thought about my understanding of nutrition and fitness. So, I started coaching, focusing on helping people lose weight on a vegan diet. I noticed the guys I coached were doing great, following their plans and getting healthier. But the women I talked to were struggling, just like me.
That made me dig deeper into research. I found out about the connections between women’s cycles, hormones, traumas, and emotions. I realized being healthy is more than just food and exercise. That pushed me to start my coaching business. My goal is clear: help vegan women lose weight in a holistic way. It’s about looking at all parts of their health, including emotional well-being, healing their relationship with food, and feeling good inside and out.
Now, I’ve worked with lots of clients worldwide, spoken at a TEDx event, and seen my coaching business grow. Looking forward, I want to make the Women’s Academy of Transformation a big thing, so every woman knows about it and has a place to get support and feel empowered.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I truly believe that having the right mindset, believing in yourself, is crucial. Yes, strategy, training, and knowledge are important, but without belief in your product, service, business, and your ability to create something significant, you’ll likely hit a roadblock. I’ve experienced this, and I’ve seen it happen to many other business owners. The reality is, challenges will come – changes in the business landscape, shifts in the economy, alterations in consumer behavior. In those tough times, the key to persevering is your belief in yourself and maintaining a resilient mindset.
I strongly recommend incorporating a routine where you focus on your mindset. Take the time to understand yourself, delve deeper, and address any belief issues, traumas, or self-image concerns. It might be surprising, but all these aspects are connected. By investing in your mindset, you build a strong foundation that will help you navigate the ups and downs of business and keep moving forward.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my client base is showcasing expertise in my field. It means being the go-to person when people think about a specific problem, like weight loss for vegan individuals. For instance, in my case, working with vegan women, specializing in vegan nutrition and menstrual cycles, positions me as the expert they can turn to for help. This strategy involves being visible on social media and various platforms, providing solutions to problems – even small ones – through content creation. Whether it’s a podcast or an Instagram post, delivering value establishes you as an expert.
Authenticity is key. People don’t just buy your product or service; they connect with you and your story. Sharing your authentic journey is crucial because in today’s market, where there are countless similar products and services, what sets you apart is the trust and belief people have in you. They choose to buy from you because they connect with your story and believe you’re the right person to help them.
