We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marci Press a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marci, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
There’s a fine line between offering to assist friends and family and being that person that friends and family begin to avoid because they find you and your request for referrals annoying. It’s extremely important that anyone and everyone you know knows that you’re a Realtor. Whenever the topic of real estate comes up in any conversation, you want “your people” to think of you first. If given the opportunity to work on a client’s behalf, I ALWAYS give my clients 110%., and go the extra mile for them. By doing so, my clients are incredibly pleased with the service I provide, and therefore, cannot wait to recommend me.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am the co-owner of the real estate brokerage, Home Central Realty, as well as a team lead and producing agent. I have just shy of 20-years of experience in residential real estate, and I truly LOVE what I do. I have an exceptional real estate team, Marci Press & Pros, and we represent Buyers and Sellers all over central Ohio.
There are close to 10,000 Realtors in central Ohio, and I believe there are a variety of reasons our team is set apart from others. First off, we have combined experience of close to 44 years, which in and of itself sets us apart. We are a team of top-notch real estate professionals who pride ourselves on our market knowledge, astute listening skills, prompt responsiveness and personalized service – all of which have helped propel our team to the top of our field.

Let’s talk M&A – we’d love to hear your about your experience with buying businesses.
In 2006, my business partner, who was also my husband at the time, and I were working as Realtors for a brokerage by the name of Home Central Realty. Unfortunately, we decided to divorce that year, as well. One day, the owners of Home Central Realty approached my then-husband, and let him know that they were going to be filing bankruptcy, and asked him whether or not he wanted to purchase the company for $1.00 (One Dollar), but that he would also have to take on their current debt with the purchase. They gave him 24-hours to respond.
Here we are, in the middle of a divorce, and he came to me and asked me whether or not I wanted to be his 50/50 partner. Are you kidding me? I gave him 50 cents and neither of us have ever looked back. :)

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the most difficult lessons I’ve had to learn as a business owner is that not everyone wants it as badly as I do. This has been a tough one for me to understand primarily because my make-up is such that if I’m going to do something – anything – I’m going to give it my all! What’s extra difficult is when one provides every opportunity possible to someone to help ensure their success, yet it’s still on them to put in all of the work and therefore, succeed. Before owning the company, I guess I never really gave much thought to the fact that not everyone is wired that way. I don’t really understand this approach, however, I continue to remind myself to have respectful disregard for how anyone else chooses to live their life. I mean, what defines success for one is possibly quite different that what defines success for someone else.
