Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rebecca Schachle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Rebecca, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
It was the beginning of 2023, when I created a hanging macrame shelf and posted it on Facebook to my friends and family. I received comment like “Let me know when you start selling!” It really got my wheels turning thinking it’s not a bad idea. At the time I was a stay at home mom while my littlest was a year old. I thought it was a great opportunity to make some money while exploring my creative side. I started experimenting with different ways to dye my macrame cord, including coffee, tea and juices. I decided that I was going to take a leap of faith, get a business license and pursue my artistic side! From that point forwards I have been blessed with many opportunities including custom orders, participating in events and even selling my pieces at small businesses in Alaska and across the country!

Rebecca, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my business Alaskan Forget Me Knot Macrame in February 2023, and I focus on functional macrame products included but not limited to plant hangers, fruit hammocks, keychains, magnets, hat hangers etc. What makes my macrame business unique is that I dye my cord so not only is every color thoughtfully chosen, I can also create specific colors to fit customers requests. Another fun way I incorporate Alaska into my work is that I use real Alaska Moose droppings for my beads in select plant hangers! They make great gift ideas for friends and family out of state.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is that I get to donate my handmade pieces to organizations for fundraising events such as silent auctions. When given enough notice, I will gather together items for the cause!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media growth has been one of the more challenges aspects of running my small business. Along with all of the other duties that come with running a small business, social media presence seems to be one that takes time and patience. Don’t give up because your business account isn’t going viral from the start. I’ve realized and accepted over time that slow growth is still growth! Some ways I’ve seemed to gain traction are by hosting giveaways, attending events and getting my name out there as well as posting consistently.
