Alright, Theodore thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I am happy as a business owner, extremely happy, and I do think about having a regular job probably almost weekly. Is that imposter syndrome? So being a business owner comes with really high highs and really low lows, but what makes me think and know I’m on the right path is constantly hearing stories about layoffs. Just last week, I had the thought of just entering back into the workforce, but that doesn’t guarantee a stable job. I see how large companies are constantly laying people off and realize that me being laid off and me chasing the next client during a time of company hardship is really no different, except that my fate and success are really dependent on me, my drive, and my tenacity. This is a reason why I know being a business owner is the path for me. My job isn’t at the mercy of company layoffs. Yes, there are still some sort of outside economic influences that dictate what makes a successful company, but you have so much more control and possibilities.

I’m Theodore Massillon, and my journey into the media industry began with a deep-seated passion for storytelling from a young age. This passion led me to explore various forms of media, from film and photography to writing and design. As I honed my skills and pursued my interests, I realized the power of media to connect people and inspire change. This realization culminated in the creation of NOM Media, an innovative media production company dedicated to crafting compelling narratives that resonate with audiences across various platforms.

Have you ever had to pivot?
There was a pivotal moment in my career when I realized that my true passion lay not just in project management, but in the art of storytelling and media creation. For over a decade, I dedicated myself to the role of a local 3 project manager, where I honed my skills in organization, logistics, and operations. However, as I delved deeper into the world of media and entertainment, I felt a burning desire to pursue a different path – one that would allow me to combine my marketing background with my passion for storytelling.
With this vision in mind, I took a leap of faith and embarked on a journey to establish my own company, with the ambitious goal of becoming the first black-owned food network. The idea was to create a platform that celebrated diverse culinary experiences while also providing a voice for underrepresented communities in the food industry.
However, as we began to lay the groundwork for our venture, something unexpected happened. We discovered that our true strength lay not in producing cooking shows, but in our ability to tell captivating stories and connect with audiences on a deeper level. Through strategic marketing campaigns and engaging content creation, we found ourselves attracting the right people to our brand and garnering widespread attention.
It was at this juncture that we made the pivotal decision to pivot our focus from being a food network to establishing ourselves as a full-fledged marketing, advertising, and media company. This shift allowed us to leverage our storytelling expertise and marketing acumen to help businesses and organizations amplify their message and reach their target audience effectively.
Looking back, I’m grateful for the journey that led me to this moment of realization. While the path may have taken unexpected turns, it ultimately led me to discover my true calling – harnessing the power of storytelling and media to make a meaningful impact in the world of marketing and advertising

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I attribute much of my reputation within my market to the principle of “boots on the ground” and the consistent effort I put into networking and building relationships. Back in 2022, I made a commitment to attend 3-4 networking events per week, and that dedication made a significant difference in establishing my presence and credibility within the industry.
By immersing myself in networking events, I had the opportunity to meet a diverse range of individuals, from fellow professionals to potential clients and collaborators. These interactions not only allowed me to expand my network but also provided valuable opportunities to practice my pitch, refine my communication skills, and showcase my expertise in the field.
Moreover, meeting people face-to-face had a profound impact on building trust and rapport. As I became a familiar face within the community, people began to recognize my passion and commitment to my work, which further solidified my reputation as a trusted professional.
Additionally, actively participating in various networks and industry groups enabled me to establish myself as a credible and knowledgeable resource within my field. By contributing to discussions, sharing insights, and offering support to others, I demonstrated my expertise and willingness to engage with the community, which helped strengthen my reputation over time.
