We were lucky to catch up with Chicky Lulu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chicky thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I would never get tired of telling this story it was my first Lesbian event back in 2009. It was Pandoras Events Monthly party Called La Descarga. I felt like a child at a candy story. The music the energy the women the club!!!!! I wanted it all!!!! I wanted to bartend, I wanted to work at the door, play the music be the host hahahaha my emotions couldn’t take it all in. I remember going home and wishing I could be a part of it. The next day I quickly did my research to find out who was who and how could be a part of it. For the next couple of years I decided to work on my craft, I took bartending classes I learned how to DJ. I even got my catering license. I had the opportunity to work in a local radio station where I learned how to host festivals and use my voice for commercials. Once I felt I was ready I opened my own event planning company called Chicky lulu Productions. Fast forward to today I not only get hired to host events but to create marketing packages for other companies.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Determination and passion are the key elements to keep pushing!!! I did so much research in field because I didn’t want to fail I didn’t want to be another event planner and most definitely I did not want to step on anyones feet. I had great mentors and people I admire and trust in the business and I wanted to always keep my doors open for everyone. My hard work and determination to prove that I could be a part of the community started to show. I worked for free for many years to prove to others and to myself I was worth the opportunity. I know at times it got really hard for me and I felt like I could never make it in the industry but my passion was stronger than my wants to give up.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media was a key element for my events to start!!! I would post my every move on social media, I would do Facebook/IG Lives from the nightclubs showing the crowd the music and celebrities that would attend. I made sure that if you were watching at home you would feel left out for not attending. I gave details from before the party began to where to go after it ended. I hired the best local DJs and promoters to attend. I did a bunch of giveaways to keep the audience engaged and to turn on the notifications so they wouldn’t miss any information. Just recently started my YouTube channel where I also engage the audience to meet new artist and community leaders on my show.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Staying humble no matter what!!!!!!!!! Always give back to the community that helped you grow. And to always remember to open doors to others who are also trying to grow in the field. I am constantly trying to help and always eager to work.
