We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hannah Volpi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hannah below.
Hannah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I didn’t enter the market with clear channels, I entered because I couldn’t imagine myself not trying. Risk doesn’t always assume financial context. Although when starting a new business that is the bulk, more of the risk is related to vulnerability and putting yourself out there. My jump off stemmed from the true essence of who I am, so the risks, even today, feel personal and exposed, but I couldn’t have imagined a different life for myself. To trust in yourself and risk failure, is never failure at all!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I own an old farm with old barns and an old house. I grow Wholesale Cut Flowers and Herbs as my main enterprise. I also grow a lot of food to nourish my working body and brain. As well as Production, I operate a Floral Design Studio. I have been in business for 6 years, and have expanded each season so far. My hope is to find my balance and build in more community interaction in the Flower fields!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My very first season, I did a CSA. I didn’t have a cooler, but someone offered me use of a fridge in their barn. They just said to plug it in. That wasn’t the only appliance in their barn though, and I’d quickly learn that my first big order I had put in a freezer and not a fridge! It was a very sad day, and I didn’t have enough flowers in the field yet to make up for it. Lesson learned! I scrambled and picked wildflowers and didn’t change them. I felt terrible but learned quickly to always test ahead and get all your systems in order way ahead of time!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Making mistakes can feel really defeating, but it’s the mistakes that redirect you the right way. And nothing makes you learn quicker than a mistake that you can feel in the pit of your belly. Little or big, they thicken your skin and show you the way. You can’t be afraid to make them.
