We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tyenesha “A.Psymmetry” Sloan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tyenesha “A.Psymmetry” below.
A.Psymmetry, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I am fortunate to be naturally gifted in so many ways. Many of my gifts are generationally genetic. Any genre of performing arts (singing, dancing, drawing, writing, etc) are all traced back to ancestors on both my maternal and paternal side. So I’m grateful for the gifts. It was a subliminal message to learn things. For instance, we weren’t beckoned in to the kitchen to learn to cook, but we had a genuine, inherent interest in learning, as we come from a family of cooks. So we stood in the kitchen watching and being hands-on. That is also applied to singing and artistry that involves drawing and playing instruments. We didn’t take lessons. The abilities are inherited. However, my biggest obstacle on the business aspect of artistry is consistency. I can be distracted from any one of the projects at any given time for specific reasons. Either being overwhelmed, exhaustion from being everyone for the business, or just needing a break from the responsibility. But the greatest advantage to these types of gifts is that they are always accessible for utilization. I can always come back and draw or write or perform or make a tasty treat as if I never left. I enjoy being able to challenge myself and being an artist is definitely a challenge.
A.Psymmetry, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
-I am a self-published author of my first novel titled “In Their Shadows: How It All Began”.
-I am creator/curator of the award-winning strawberry banana pudding from my dessert business Banomnom Pudding.
-I am a poet that is also part of the amazing trio of poets called S.I.P. (Sistas In Poetry), which is a performance group that includes Lyrik Hunter and MzJolie.
-I am the designer/creator of Conscious Existence Gear,
which is a clothing line with majority pieces that are hand drawn by me.
-I am also a pool/billiards player that placed 5th in the nation with my 2022 team called “SaySum’n” in Las Vegas.
-So you can say that I’m pretty competitive and I despise losing. LOL!
-I’m also in year 21 as a Licensed Massage Therapist, but am on the retired spectrum of that career at this point.
The main thing that I’m most proud of is my ability to bounce back. I know when to take a break and not chastise myself about it. I allow myself grace in business. I think we as business owners forget that our market is bigger than what we can see. So we pressure ourselves into exhaustion to the point that our businesses suffer negatively. Our health suffers negatively. We see the smoke screens on social media and compare our progress (or lack thereof) to other people. We think if we take a break and tend to ourselves that our businesses will fall behind. That people will forget us. But tending to your psychological, emotional, and physical health allows you the chance to evaluate and put life in to perspective. It’s a rat race and no one is really winning. It’s a matter of figuring out what’s important and putting things in to the proper order. It’s 8 billion people in the world. We can’t please them all, but it’s that many more people that we have an opportunity to introduce our business to. Do what you can and be proud of that.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
