Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Debbie Alamrew. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Debbie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I have been writing poems since I was six years old (I recently found a report card at my parent’s home that confirms this). I was painfully shy as a child and didn’t talk much (something people who know me now are always shocked to find out lol). I felt a sense of power being able to express how I was feeling through rhyme. As a little girl, my grandmother passed away and I didn’t understand how to process the grief. I wrote a poem for each member of my family and saw how deeply my words touched them. That’s when I learned the impact words can have and the moment I decided that I wanted to share my words with the world.
I went on to become a spoken word poet but I didn’t self-publish my debut poetry book until 2019. That is the most meaningful project to me as it was my true introduction to the world as a poet. I titled my book “A Purpose Pursued Passionately is Powerful” because I believe that very deeply.

Debbie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
When I first discovered poetry it was as a passion. I never imagined the opportunities that would present themselves to me on this journey of establishing myself as a poet. I stepped on a stage for the first time as a college sophomore at a university talent show (the worst case of the butterflies I’ve ever experienced)! The fear quickly turned into exhilaration and I knew that wouldn’t be my last time on a stage. I started performing my poetry at open mic nights in Los Angeles and have since been booked to perform on stages in New York City, London, Ethiopia, and Ghana to name a few.
Everything I write is deeply personal to my life experiences. I believe what sets me apart is my ability to poetically capture emotions that we all feel, so it is truly special to me every time a person resonates with my words.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to take my pain, joy, anger, heartbreak, and all other emotions and turn them into a tangible piece of art that I can share with the world. It is a priceless feeling to be able to connect with others and also to look back on my growth as a person and an artist.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I grew my TikTok platform from 5,000 to 35k in just a few months through my poetry videos! I have two main pieces of advice when building your social media presence.
One, the world of social media is extremely vast so find your niche. What do you enjoy posting about? Be authentic with the content you create as that will always come across and it’s what your audience wants from you most!
Two, post consistently! Your videos may not gain much traction early on but you have to trust the process and keep posting!
