Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shunita Salone. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shunita, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
After years of baking as a hobby and side gig, 2021 was the year I began earning a full time living from my creative work. I decided to take the leap and make it happen. When I started out, I wanted every customer just to get my name out there. I thought that volume was the most important key to making a living out of my creative passion. I soon realized though, that not all clients are created equal. Once I accepted the fact that it was okay not to have every customer, my work flourished. The most-effective change I made was to start charging my worth! This seemed counter-intuitive to me: was I out-pricing my market? However, I was able to establish clients that trusted my work enough to allow me the creative freedom I had been searching for and to make a living while doing it. I began to value my clients that valued my product, quality, and customer service. Building that rapport with repeat customers has been essential in growing and sustaining my business by leading to referrals down the road.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have been baking professionally for 9 years in the DFW area.
With so many talented bakers and pastry chefs in Dallas, I knew I would need something to set me apart, so I devoted patience and focus to developing scratch cake recipes that would stand the test of time and give me a consistent product. Fast-forward, I’ve now assembled over 25 recipes that have been tested, adjusted, modified, re-tested, changed, changed back, to give me the perfect cake – every time! Of course, anyone with a baking business will think they have the best cake, so I also pride myself on providing the freshest product possible. My standards are incredibly high. I am most proud of my perfected cake recipes.
The other thing that sets me apart from others in the same field is that I also offer scratch catering for any meals needed – not just dessert. I prefer to work with my client on developing a menu tailored to any event such as weddings, birthdays, baby showers, or corporate events. Our menus are better than your run-of-the-mill catering options and give you Grandma-home cooking-Sunday-Dinner mouth-watering vibes. Our remarkable team works very hard to ensure that the food and the service we provide are flawless.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
In the beginning I struggled so much trying to have everything right. It’s a scary feeling to think you might need to put in some work to get better at something you’ve decided to try to make a living on. I think that non-creatives can identify with that feeling because even though everyone might not be a creative, everyone has started something for the first time and knows how scary it can be to fail.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative for me is being able to wake up everyday, live my dreams and create edible art. I am so grateful for my gifts and the constant support. It’s a pleasure to share in customers memories year to year!
